This role enables you to transition from experience in private, public, government, or military settings to a career will work closely with a small, highly skilled team of machinists and engineers to produce high‑precision microreplication tooling that supports a wide range of business functions across 3M.
- Work in a collegial atmosphere with a small group of highly skilled machinists and engineers producing high precision microreplication tooling that supports a wide range of businesses across 3M.
- Set up cutting tools and other associated equipment to produce machined parts.
- Perform test‑cuts to determine machine offsets and other process parameters.
- Use metrology and inspections as part of set‑up work and determine whether machined parts meet specifications.
- Provide input and feedback to the engineering staff regarding plans for or results of machining projects.
- Perform minor maintenance tasks and troubleshoot milling equipment.
- Initially work weekdays on first shift to complete on‑the‑job training (OJT); after OJT, transition to first‑shift weekend schedule.
- Support a long‑term career at 3M with opportunities for advancement while maintaining hands‑on involvement with dynamic technologies.
- Two‑year degree or higher in Machine Tool Technology (or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
- One year of combined precision machining experience on CNC lathes and/or mills, including programming and editing G&M code CNC part programs in a private, public, government, or military environment.
- Diamond‑machining experience on multi‑axis CNC machines.
- Strong abilities with Siemens NX CAD/CAM and proficiency in writing, modifying, and optimizing CNC programs using G‑code, macro, and CAM software.
- Experience with precision metrology methods, including interferometry, profilometry, and confocal microscopy.
- Exceptional critical thinking and analytical skills, data‑driven decision making, and basic math, trigonometry, mechanical aptitude.
- Self‑starter with a hands‑on approach to problem solving who can work independently with minimal supervision and effectively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational, time‑management, and professional communication skills, familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Background in tool and die making.
- Experience supporting CNC machine maintenance and reliability.
Location:
Maplewood, MN (on‑site daily at the 3M Center). This is a full‑time position that requires a weekend shift. No travel or relocation is required.
