Overview
Follow your passions and find your purpose as a Summer Reads VISTA Leader! We’re seeking motivated individuals who are ready to think creatively to help Summer Associate Ameri Corps VISTA members navigate their service. Literacy Minnesota works to build a more equitable society by making quality literacy education available to all. We are a comprehensive literacy resource and provide free classes for adults and children;
support literacy organizations through volunteer recruitment, training and teaching tools; and create new pathways for groups and individuals to reach their full potential. Our programs and services are both nationwide and local to the state of Minnesota. We train and place Ameri Corps members through three service opportunities:
Summer Reads, Literacy Leadership (Literacy for All & Digital Literacy tracks) and Digital Navigation Corps. In Summer Reads, 30 members serve in MN as K‑5 children’s literacy mentors over the summer, bringing literacy to life through fun and enriching activities. In Literacy Leadership, about 15 members serve for one year behind‑the‑scenes in nonprofits, public agencies and Tribal Nations throughout the U.S. to create, enhance or expand literacy‑focused programs for low‑income, immigrant or refugee children, youth, adults or families.
In Digital Navigation Corps, 20 members serve one year in underserved communities assisting adults who are working to achieve professional goals through digital skills‑building. 100% of positions require that applicants have completed at least one year of full‑time national service (full‑time Ameri Corps, VISTA, NCCC or Peace Corps) prior to start. Alternative start dates may be available. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until positions are filled.
Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all.
The Summer Reads VISTA Leader primarily supports our Summer Associate Ameri Corps VISTA program. This role will plan and facilitate orientation, weekly trainings and an end‑of‑service celebration. During programming you’ll conduct site visits, support members through challenges, and organize opportunities for alumni. After the summer is over, you’ll help staff analyze Summer Reads outcomes to plan for sustainable future programming and develop ways to tell stories of the impact of our program.
In the fall and winter you’ll assess program needs, revise our current layout, and begin reaching out to host sites to set us up for a strong, well‑planned 2027 and beyond. You’ll also shape our cohort by working closely with staff on the member recruitment process. You’ll engage in professional development and uphold our reputation for providing high‑quality service opportunities.
