Assistant Director of Finance & Grants
Terch and Associates Consulting, on behalf of Churches United in Ministry (Chum), is seeking a nonprofit accountant to serve as the Assistant Director of Finance.
About the OrganizationChum is a charity founded to provide local help to themembers of our community who need it the most and is governed by 40 Duluth areafaith-based congregations. Chum works to provide emergency shelter and medicalattention to the unhoused, to provide food to the hungry, to address socialissues through outreach and advocacy, and to provide long-term housingsolutions to those affected by our housing shortage.
Chum helps over 8,000 people per year: a number equal toabout 10% of the population of Duluth. Among other properties, Chum operatesthe Chum Drop-In Emergency Shelter, the Chum Clinic, two food shelves, the Steve O’Neil and St. Francis Apartment buildings, and has plans for largedevelopment and capital investment projects in the near future.
Outside of its properties, Chum provides street outreach tothose who cannot or will not enter shelter to help them meet their basic needs,overcome barriers, and stabilize their housing to reduce the need for law enforcement intervention. Finally, Chum’s advocacy is aimed at making stays inits emergency shelter short and non-reoccurring by engaging with statewidepartners and lawmakers to achieve support services and permanently affordable housing for all in need.
To achieve this noble mission, Chum receives funding fromits member congregations; charitable individuals in our region; foundations andother grantors; and the local, state, and federal government. Because of thewide variety of funding, and the diverse ways through which Chum supports its neighbors,it takes a consummate accounting professional to ensure it all runs smoothly.
About the RoleThe Assistant Director of Finance and Grants supports the Director of Finance in maintaining Chum’s financial health, accountability, and long-term continuity. The position shares responsibility for budgeting, payroll, general ledger maintenance, financial reporting and analysis, external audits, and the Form 990 process while helping ensure appropriate segregation of financial duties.
This role also oversees the financial management of Chum’s grant funding. Working closely with grant writers and program managers, the Assistant Director tracks grant expenses, prepares financial and closeout reports, develops budgets for grant applications, and supports compliance with funder requirements.
This position is ideal for an accounting professional who is ready to advance their career in nonprofit finance. The successful candidate will bring strong technical and organizational skills, a collaborative approach, and the ability to maintain transparency and accountability while supporting programs across the organization.
The salary for this role ranges from $68,000 to $75,000 annually based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
RequirementsTo fill this role, we’re seeking an accountant with someexposure to those duties in a nonprofit environment and a desire to advance their career. There are some differences between nonprofit and for-profit accounting and so applicants from a for-profit environment should be prepared for substantial learning opportunities.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have a four-year degree in accounting and three years of experience OR have seven years of accounting experience.
- Have experience with grant reporting to bothgovernment and non-profit grantors.
- Have familiarity with Sage software.
