External Description

License/Certification Requirements: Valid MN Driver’s License, current insurance or be insurable.
Summary: Assists the plant resources department in research and management projects related to non-native and native plants within the Leech Lake Reservation.

Education Requirements and Experience
  • Pursuing a Degree in Biology, Botany, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or related field preferred, or have completed coursework in those fields.
  • Familiarity with invasive species and local land/water conservation issues.
  • Experience with pressure washers, brush saws, and mowers.
  • Experience installing post construction stabilization mats, seeding at the correct rates, and utilization of live staking.
  • Knowledge of tree pruning and care.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Interest in botany, forest management, regional shifts in ecology, and/or forest and fire ecology.
  • Interest in seed collection, cleaning, preservation, banking, and distribution.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently and follow safety protocols at all times.
  • Good organizational skills to ensure project work is completed on schedule.
  • Must be able to physically work out of doors during 8 to 10 hour shifts.
  • Sufficient writing skills to keep a daily log of activities and write summary reports
  • Self-directing, resourceful and able to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to use Arc Map, Collector, navigate using maps, compass and GPS and to work alone in remote locations.
  • Ability to accurately enter and check data into computer spreadsheets.
  • Ability to work with tribal and non-tribal resource management personnel and the public.
  • Must have the ability to follow written and verbal communications and follow protocol.
  • Must possess the attitude and aptitude for working within the field of Natural Resources.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in Botany and/or Invasive species management are required.
  • Must be enthusiastic and possess strong work ethics.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and customer service skills.
  • Experience utilizing hand powered tools (e.g. chainsaw, brush saw) operate a riding lawn mower ATV/UTV.
  • Experience driving light trucks and trailers.
  • Pre-employment drug testing is mandatory for all Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe safety sensitive positions.
  • Drone License.
Supervisory Duties

None.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Duties/Responsibilities: Complete work and tasks in a timely manner as directed by the LLDRM Plant Program Director or Crew Leader.
  • Work under the direction of the Program Director and/or crew leader to implement a variety of restoration projects intended to be control methods for non-native invasive species (NNIS).
  • Coordinate with ROW agencies to contain the spread of noxious and invasive species.
  • Ecological site assessments on ROW’s and disturbed sites.
  • Prune apple orchard/fruit tree sites.
  • Coordinate with food bank to organize a community harvest in the fall.
  • Follow protocol for field work and accurate data collection.
  • Assist in the botanical surveys and assessments of plant communities/ecosystems on reservation lands and ROWs.
  • Assist in the implementation of habitat enhancement projects for plants and/or wildlife on the reservation.
  • Keep an accurate daily log of field activities.
  • Greenhouse duties as they arise.
  • Must be respectful of culturally sensitive plants and follow tribal guidance to preserve them.
  • Responsible for practicing and insuring work place safety within the field and office at all times.
  • Attend and or conduct all mandatory meetings and trainings as required.
  • On-the-job training provided for equipment use.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics at all times.
  • Understanding and sensitive to Native American culture.

    Adhere to policies governing staff conduct.
  • All other related duties as assigned.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50lbs on occasion.
  • Aspects of this position require traversing uplands, lowlands, and wetlands to conduct fieldwork.
  • Ability to hike uneven and often wet terrain for long periods of time is a must.
  • Must have the ability to work in inclement weather conditions and endure insects such as mosquitoes, deer flies, ticks, and occasional encounters with stinging insects.
