Position Overview
Stantec is a leading global provider of professional consulting services in environmental sciences, engineering, and archaeology. We are seeking experienced Archaeology Technicians to join our dynamic team on a project basis. As an Archaeology Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting field programs by assisting with data collection and analysis. The hourly, on‑call position supports archaeological fieldwork needs in the Upper Midwest region, requiring work outdoors in urban and remote locations for extended periods under all weather conditions, often traversing rugged terrain.
Extensive travel may be required. Projects typically run from March through November, with opportunities for winter fieldwork. Multi‑week field assignments are common. The standard workweek is Monday‑Friday, with overtime and weekend work based on project demands and weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with field crews to conduct archaeological fieldwork.
- Demonstrate skills in pre‑contact and historic artifact identification, soil analysis, and interpretation.
- Operate under the supervision of a field director or crew lead in Minnesota and neighboring states.
- Assist with occasional laboratory duties on a project‑specific basis.
- Travel extensively to project sites.
- Prioritize safety in field and laboratory practices.
- Operate and maintain field equipment including GPS units, digital cameras, tablets, and hand tools.
- Follow established safety protocols for hazardous conditions including extreme weather, wildlife encounters, and excavation safety.
- Participate in daily tailgate safety meetings and follow site‑specific safety plans.
- Exercise stop‑work authority when unsafe conditions are identified.

- Ability to walk 4–10 miles per day over rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
- Conduct Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III data recovery.
- Perform laboratory duties including artifact processing, classification, curation, photography, database management, mapping, and report layout.
- Maintain ability to travel to and from onsite jobs and the Plymouth office locations as needed.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field.
- Previous experience in a field school or CRM setting as an archaeologist, surveyor, or similar role.
- Technical expertise or specialty within Archaeology/Anthropology is advantageous.
- Familiarity with recording field data using ESRI’s Field Maps is highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of Upper Midwest archaeology and field methods is preferred.
Position is based in Plymouth, MN. Projects include a mix of local and out‑of‑town field projects throughout the Upper Midwest. Candidates living across the Upper Midwest are encouraged to apply.

Pay RangeLocations in MN, OH, VT, and various CA, NY areas: $45,500.00 – $63,700.00 annually.
