Summary
Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) provide security and protection of air travelers, airports, and aircraft in a courteous and professional manner. Duties include operating screening equipment, performing searches, controlling terminal entry and exit points, interacting with the public, and maintaining focus in stressful environments.
Duties- Operating screening equipment to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and passengers.
- Performing searches and physical interactions with passengers, including pat‑downs and bag searches up to 50 lbs.
- Controlling terminal entry and exit points.
- Interacting with the public, giving directions and responding to inquiries.
- Maintaining focus and awareness in a noisy, high‑pressure environment.
- Engaging in critical thinking to mitigate security threats using risk‑based protocols.
- Applying knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures and adapting to new information.
Salary range for Duluth, MN (DLH - Duluth International Airport) is $40,736 to $56,844 (or $19.52 to $27.24 per hour), including a locality pay adjustment of 17.06%.
Conditions of Employment- U.S. citizenship or U.S. national status.
- Minimum age 18.
- Selective Service registration required.
- Successful completion of structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.
- Subject to post‑employment random drug and/or alcohol testing.
- Available to work various shifts, overtime, and mandatory travel for training.
- Proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking).
- Exposure to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals.
- Maintain physical agility to squat, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Walk up to 3 miles during a shift and stand for prolonged periods (up to 4 hours).
To qualify for the SV‑D pay band (GS‑5/6), you must meet one of the following:
- Experience: At least one year of full‑time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X‑ray technician.
- Education: High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC certificate.
- 40 hours per week.
- Shift work on any day (Sunday–Saturday) with irregular hours, nights, holidays, overtime, extended, weekend, and split shifts as required.
- 16–32 hours per week.
- Shift work on any day (Sunday–Saturday) with irregular hours, nights, holidays, overtime, extended, weekend, and split shifts as required.
- Complete classroom training, on‑the‑job training, initial certification testing, recertification, and specialized training.
- Maintain background, criminal, credit, and periodic drug and alcohol screening.
TSA may apply a sex‑specific (male or female) hiring preference to fill TSO positions in order to meet security mission and same‑sex pat‑down job‑related requirements. Candidates of the needed sex will receive preference in scheduling and selection.
