Work hard. Work outside. Spend your winters off.

If you’re looking for a role that keeps you active, outdoors, and part of something that truly matters—while still giving you time off during the winter—this opportunity offers a unique balance.

Lake Region Electric Cooperative (LREC), a member‑owned electric utility serving more than 30,000 member‑consumers in the counties of Otter Tail, Wilkin, Grant, Douglas, Clay, and Becker (service territory), is seeking a full‑time, seasonal Cable & Pipeline Locator to support safe excavation and protect underground electric and natural gas infrastructure across our service territory.

This position typically works April through November, following our standard daytime schedule, and is laid off during the winter months—while still offering full‑time benefits.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you’ll play a critical part in keeping communities safe and ensuring reliable energy service by:

  • Locating and marking underground electric distribution cables and natural gas pipelines
  • Responding to Gopher State One Call (GSOC) tickets accurately and on time
  • Using mapping systems and locating equipment to identify underground infrastructure
  • Coordinating with contractors, excavators, and internal teams to support safe digging
  • Maintaining accurate records and documentation of all locate activity
  • Supporting field operations and assisting with other system‑related work as needed

Your work directly prevents service disruptions, protects infrastructure, and supports the safety of the public and field crews.

Why This Role Stands Out
  • Seasonal Schedule with Stability – Work a consistent full‑time schedule April–November, with winter layoff
  • Full‑Time Benefits – Health, retirement, and other benefits included
  • Work Outdoors – Spend your days in the field, not behind a desk
  • Live & Work in Lakes Country – Enjoy everything the Pelican Rapids area has to offer
We’re Looking For
  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to 1–3 years in a related field
  • Experience in construction, field services, utilities, or outdoor work preferred
  • Ability to read maps and operate tools, equipment, and mobile technology
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in field conditions
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet insurability requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Additional Details
  • Standard daytime schedule (7:30 a – 4 p; Mon – Fri) during the working season
  • Overtime may be required based on workload and operational needs
  • May support outage or emergency response as needed

At LREC, you’re not just doing a job—you’re supporting reliable energy service for the communities we serve. If you’re someone who enjoys hands‑on work, takes pride in doing things right, and values time outdoors, this could be a great fit.

LREC offers a generous compensation package including fully paid single coverage health insurance premium, company 401k match and substantial paid time off, including front loading accrual. This position’s starting union wage range is $25.00 - $28.00/hr with a training progression period and wage adjustments to conclude over 2 years. Job offer rates are determined based on the candidate’s specific education, experience, knowledge, skills, and in alignment with market data.
