Position: MSEA (Minnesota School Employees Association)

Field Representative

Minnesota School Employees Association is seeking an individual to train as a Field Representative to work directly with union members across Minnesota.

MSEA is an independent union of nearly 7,000 classified school employees from over 70 school districts in Minnesota. MSEA members are administrative assistants, para educators, food service employees, technicians, custodians, interpreters and bus drivers.

Job Description The Field Representative is responsible for performing a multitude of duties that provide services to MSEA members, including matters related to the negotiations and employee representations. The Field Representative empowers and advocates for all members in the workplace.

Job Duties

  • Lead in contract negotiations and enforcement/administration of collective bargaining agreements, including advising and representing members.
  • Assist with efforts to increase member involvement at the local level including work site visits and attending unit meetings.
  • Stay current on relevant laws, bargaining trends, organizing conditions and other matters relating to labor relations and terms and conditions of employment.
  • Communicate pertinent information as appropriate and necessary to keep members informed.
  • Deliver training to members and leaders on topics relevant to their current needs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma and at least 2 years’ experience in a union environment.
  • Basic knowledge of PELRA.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including public relations skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work duties with limited supervision.
  • Ability to conduct research and gather information to evaluate issues and proposals.
  • Ability to lead the collective bargaining process.
  • Ability to educate, train, lead and motivate members.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment as the situation requires.
  • Ability to manage conflict professionally and effectively with the motivation to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to flex schedule to work some nights and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license.
