Responsibilities
- Operate all types of equipment to perform safety functions such as operating manual transmission, chaining tires, etc.; skilled and qualified to drive in all terrain, routes, and environmental conditions.
- Safely operate a tractor/trailer in the transportation of freight in accordance with company, federal, state, and local laws regarding run times and FMCSA regulations.
- Adhere to all FMCSA requirements for holders of a Commercial Driver’s License.
- Maintain required records in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Comply with all requirements for safe and legal transportation of hazardous materials.
- Secure equipment and cargo.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure safe working conditions of the tractor and trailer prior to and after each trip.
- Check gauges and visual indicators for malfunctions, ensure seal or lock on trailers, and conduct inspections of vehicle before and during trips to identify problems.
- Promptly report all maintenance problems to Fleet Services and/or supervision.
- Verify unit numbers versus paperwork and report any discrepancies to the supervisor.
- Use in-cab technology, including electronic logs, as required.
- Drive various schedules and work the dock based on business needs.
- Run over-the-road as approved by Safety and required by business needs.
- Provide professional and courteous service to customers and the general public.
- Assist on local pick up and delivery routes, hub/regional runs, dock work including loading/unloading freight, and customer site loading/unloading freight.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Perform any other duties and tasks as assigned by operational, safety, or business needs.
- High School Diploma or GED, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent background.
- 21 years of age required (1 year driving experience required).
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License.
- Registered with FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Reside within 75 miles of the domiciled Service Center and/or work assignment.
- Hazmat, Tanker and Doubles endorsements required; LCV requirements may apply.
- Ability to drive a tractor trailer in accordance with FMCSA requirements.
- Stable employment history preferred.
- Ability to operate a forklift (minimum 7,500 lb vehicle).
- Ability to push or pull a loaded pallet jack and/or hand truck with a minimum load of 70 lbs.
- Physical activities include standing, lifting, twisting, turning, climbing a ladder, etc.
- Capable of dropping/hooking and coupling trailers that involve cranking landing gear, pulling 5th wheel pins (~65 lbs of pressure) and maneuvering a trailer dolly.
- Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) and compliance with FMCSA state motor vehicle laws and FMCSA rules.
- Pass FMCSA required medical exam and road test.
- Meet FMCSA requirements to speak and read English.
- Lift approximately 70 lbs., or more if required by essential functions.
- Drive all routes and terrain types including mountains, steep roads, curvy highways, desert, bridges, tunnels, etc.
- Operate in all environmental conditions (rain, wind, snow, freezing temperatures, hot weather, etc.).
- Operate all safety and operational functions of equipment (chaining tires, driving manual/automatic transmissions, etc.).
- Comply with all company policies, rules, procedures, and Code of Conduct.
- Interact well with others and work both independently and as part of a team.
- Capable of working under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
- Respond well to questions; read, interpret, and comply with written information and documents (safety rules, procedures, maintenance instructions) with high comprehension and concentration.
- Pass pre-employment drug screen, random drug/alcohol tests, and subject to criminal history background check.
- Authorized to work in United States.
Frequent lifting or moving of a minimum of 70 lbs. Requires close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
