Overview

Union Pacific seeks a Train Crew employee to provide safe and timely movement of customer freight. Previous railroad experience is not required; all necessary training will be provided. Successful candidates will begin with an annual salary of approximately $80,000, with potential to grow to over $100,000 after five years of service.

What Should You Know
  • Changing seniority locations or crafts is approved based on business needs and may not be granted. Commit to your craft and work location for a minimum of 2 years.
  • The 14‑week training class combines classroom and on‑the‑job instruction. Attendance for the full duration and successful completion of all exams are required for continued employment.
  • Post‑training, you will work in either road or yard service based on the territory you hold seniority and seniority date.
  • Road service crews may be required to work between two locations and stay away from their home terminal point; lodging is provided by Union Pacific.
  • Yard and local service crews work with an engineer or by remote control, classifying and building outbound trains.
  • This is a seniority‑based position and you may be called to cover locations within your seniority area that are beyond your original location. Lodging may or may not be provided depending on the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You may be required to work an assignment that is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Compensated time off is generally not available during your first year, aside from paid sick days.
  • Temporary furloughs are possible depending on business volumes. Furloughs and recalls are based on seniority dates.
  • Union Pacific prohibits the use of drugs and alcohol. Random, reasonable‑suspicion, and post‑accident testing will be conducted.
Accountabilities
  • Inspect equipment, locomotives, and rail cars to ensure safe operation.
  • Perform tasks such as coupling equipment, aligning drawbars, operating remote control locomotives, applying and releasing hand brakes, riding rail cars, replacing couplers or knuckles, and communicating information to crews, yard controllers, and dispatchers via radio or hand signals.
  • Maintain accurate written and electronic documentation and prepare necessary materials as required.
  • Observe and comply with all railroad rules, safety regulations, operational procedures, and FRA standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by a supervisor.
Qualifications – Required
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Clean driving record within the past 36 months, with no suspensions, revocations, cancellations, or denials related to drug or alcohol incidents.
  • Never been involved in diversion or probation, nor pleaded guilty to a drug or alcohol‑related driving incident.
  • Willingness to undergo a drug and alcohol test related to vehicle operation, if requested.
  • Successfully complete an English language assessment before the interview stage.
Qualifications – Preferred
  • Experience working on 2nd and/or 3rd shifts.
  • Experience working outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
  • Experience operating or working around heavy equipment in motion.
  • Experience working in confined spaces and at heights.
Physical and Mental

Job Requirements
  • Must pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT) prior to employment.
  • Normal color vision and depth perception for signal detection and equipment movement.
  • Ability to lift, pull, push, and carry up to 85 lbs.
  • Ability to perform coordinated hand movements for grasping and placing objects.
  • Capacity to engage in physically demanding tasks, including bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing ladders.
  • Ability to walk up to 5 miles per shift on uneven terrain and work at heights of 12 feet or more.
  • Capability to detect unusual sounds or smells during inspections and respond promptly.
Work Conditions
  • May travel with trains, spending days away from the home terminal.
  • Work is outdoors in all weather conditions, including snow, ice, rain, cold, and heat.
  • Variable work hours; may be called in on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring company sponsorship.
