The state of Minnesota requires skillful transport maintenance to keep roads safe throughout seasons.

• Maintains and reconstructs roadways, right‑of‑ways, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; maintains roadsides—installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt‑A‑Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair.
• Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for maintaining roadways.
• Performs traffic control set‑ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual, to ensure the safety of employees and the traveling public.
• Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, brush, etc. on roadside—planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal. Includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding.

• Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti‑icing and de‑icing chemicals under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; performs night or dawn patrols.
• Prepares and inspects winter equipment—maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; cleans equipment after storm.
• Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post‑storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
• Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.

This is a full‑time, year‑round position with seasonal schedules. Summer hours are Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (4‑10’s). Winter hours are anticipated to be Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations. Work may require days, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

• Exam Part 1:
  Experience — One year performing activities in snow & ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
• OR Education — Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) substitutes for one year of experience. (Submit transcripts.)
• AND License — Valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with tanker endorsement, no air‑brake restriction. Ability to upgrade to a CDL Class A with tanker endorsement and no air‑brake restriction within 30 days of hire.
