Job Overview

At the State of Minnesota, employees play a critical role in developing policies and providing essential services. The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM students. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. at the start of employment.

Responsibilities

In the summer, this position may focus on road surface and roadside maintenance, including:

  • Maintaining and reconstructing roadways, right-of-ways, and roadside infrastructure.
  • Performing preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operating tractor mowers and small rollers.
  • Setting up traffic control in high-volume traffic as per temporary traffic zone layouts.
  • Carrying out landscaping duties such as planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming, and stump removal.

In the winter, this position may focus on snow and ice control, including:

  • Removing snow from roadways and rights-of-way and applying de-icing chemicals.
  • Maintaining snowplow equipment and performing post-storm cleanup.
  • Inspecting winter routes and documenting snow and ice data for inventory reporting.
Hours of Work

This is a full-time, year‑round position with seasonal schedules. Summer hours are Monday–Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (4–10 hrs). Winter hours are Monday–Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hours may include overtime and various shifts depending on emergency situations and weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications Transportation Generalist
  • Experience: One year performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities.
  • Education:

    Completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) may substitute for one year of experience.
  • License: Valid Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction. Ability to upgrade to Class A with tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire.
  • English proficiency: Ability to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate via radio and electronic devices; maintain routine written logs.
Transportation Associate
  • License: Commercial Driver's Permit with no air brake restrictions; tanker endorsement must be obtained by hire date. Must obtain a Class A CDL within 3 months.
  • English proficiency: Same as above.
Exam Part 2

Candidates made a contingent offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. Passing scores are level 3 or higher for Math and level 4 or higher for Reading. Acceptance of the position is contingent on passing.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous MnDOT experience as a Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.
Physical Requirements

Ability to work nights, be exposed to weather elements, drive on and off‑road conditions, walk on uneven terrain, perform various body positions, operate machinery under varying temperatures, and move 50–70 pounds. Must wear and use personal protective equipment.

Additional Requirements

Successful candidate must pass past‑employer reference checks and criminal history check. Background check may include SEMA4 records, criminal history, employment reference, education/license verification, and driver’s license check. The position is contingent on having a valid Commercial Driver’s License, a federal DOT pre‑employment drug test, and participation in the FMSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
