Position: District 7 - Heavy Equipment Operator

District 7 - Heavy Equipment Operator

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are responsible for operating power equipment and performing related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.

Responsibilities
  • Operate equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, bulldozers, front‑end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi‑trailers, snow removal equipment, etc.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repair failures in the roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
  • Repair and/or replace signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
  • Provide traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
  • Apply herbicide to highway rights‑of‑way to control weeds and other unwanted vegetation.
  • Remove debris including tires, animal carcass, spilled items and other obstacles.
Level Descriptors

Level I – basic level; work under close supervision operating and maintaining power equipment and performing unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks in highway construction, maintenance, repair.

Level II – career level; perform skilled work operating heavy equipment used in highway construction or repair; also perform various routine maintenance duties.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Level I – knowledge of safe operation of heavy machinery, ability to perform manual labor, maintain and operate power equipment, follow instructions.

Level II – knowledge of operation and servicing of heavy equipment, materials used in highway construction and maintenance, proper highway traffic control; ability to operate heavy equipment, use construction materials, follow instructions, communicate effectively.

Education and Experience

Level I – none.

Level II – one year experience operating heavy equipment.

Special Requirements
  • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license at time of employment.
  • May require a valid Oklahoma commercial driver’s license, class A or B with appropriate endorsements.
  • Must possess or obtain a commercial driver’s license, class A, no later than five months from appointment (for ODOT employees).
  • Must have a CDL tank vehicle endorsement (for ODOT employees).
  • Applicants must take and pass a drug test prior to appointment.
  • Must be willing and able to perform all job‑related travel normally associated with this position, including emergency hours and on‑call duty.
  • Must regularly lift 80 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds; required vision abilities include close, distance, peripheral and depth perception.
  • Positions may be safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. § 427.8.
