Position: Scientist (Hydrometry)

Scientist (Hydrometry) – Dumfries

SEPA is recruiting a full‑time, permanent Scientist (Hydrometry) based in Dumfries. The role is part of the Evidence and Water Resilience portfolio and supports Scotland’s mandatory flood warning, drought risk assessment, bathing water assessment and flood modelling and mapping activities.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and perform field work across a defined geographic area, collecting reliable data on flows and levels in rivers, lochs, groundwater and tidal sites.
  • Ensure safe working practices for yourself and colleagues; mentor and manage the workload of Assistant Scientists.
  • Provide accurate stage–discharge relationships through data analysis and interpretation.
  • Maintain a group of hydrometric monitoring stations, coordinating with contractors, landowners and external stakeholders.
  • Support operational Climate Resilience activities and participate in an on‑call duty rota as required.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of environmental or hydrological processes and at least two years of technical or scientific professional experience.
  • Minimum HND (or equivalent relevant experience).
  • Good communication and team‑working skills.
  • Experience of lone work outdoors and knowledge of health and safety / safe working practices.
  • Strong IT skills and experience with technical IT applications.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
