Job Title
Teacher Assistant - Special Education Paraprofessional
Job GoalTo help provide a smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.
Reports ToTeacher, Building Administrator
Performance Responsibilities- Prepare for classroom activities under supervision of a certified teacher.
- Perform clerical duties for assigned teachers.
- Conduct learning exercises with small groups of children.
- Guide children in working and playing harmoniously with other children.
- Provide escort and assistance to children as necessary, including accompaniment off campus (e.g., on bus, to physical therapy, to P.E. class).
- Assist teacher with non‑instructional classroom duties, such as feeding, toileting (which may include diapering), clothing routines, physical therapy, and other basic needs.
- Foster good eating habits and table manners in children.
- Assist the teacher in duplication of needed materials.
- Grade papers and help with records when called upon.
- Assist with an individual child’s particular needs when required.
- Work with students on an individual basis.
- Guide students in their participation in school and community activities.
- Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.
- Perform other related tasks as directed by the teacher and/or building administrator.
- Must have one of the following:
- 48 College Credit Hours
- Associate Degree
- Passed OGET Test
- Passed PARAPRO Test (you may apply without and will have the opportunity to pass PARAPRO Test after a job offer)
- Obtained a National Career Readiness Certificate through successful completion of the ACT Work Keys assessment
- Must pass a National Criminal History Record Check.
- Meet State Department of Education requirements.
- Demonstrates aptitude for the work to be performed.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude toward a school environment.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to the public and other employees of the organization.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
OtherSkills and Abilities
Ability to cooperate in a team effort with other employees.
Physical DemandsThe employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty‑five (25) pounds.
Work EnvironmentModerate noise level; students may range from severe to moderately low‑functioning.
Terms of EmploymentSalary and work year will be determined by current contract. 9 months – 7 hours per day.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
