Job Title

Probation and Parole Officer

Position Summary

Full‑time, regular position.

Compensation:
Level I – $48,044.52 Level II – $50,834.80 Level III – $54,700.76

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are responsible for performing routine professional social service and law‑enforcement duties in the areas of assessment of criminogenic need, transition plan design, treatment referral, and ongoing monitoring of offender behavior. Supervision services are provided in the community for probationers, parolees, and inmates in re‑entry programs to increase public safety by reducing future criminal behavior.

Typical Functions
  • Manages a caseload of adult probationers using motivational interviewing to complete a scientific assessment of criminogenic risk/need, identify the offender’s stage of change, and determine criminogenic needs. Refers offenders to appropriate treatments or programs, monitors activities to ensure adherence, assists in employment, engages support networks, and identifies pro‑social interests.
  • Conducts investigations including home visits, pre‑sentence, interstate, pre‑pardon, and pre‑parole.
  • Prepares all reports concerning offender activities, special reports, violations, and court reports; provides recommendations for the releasing authority.
  • Maintains documentation both physical and electronic.
  • Monitors payment of financial obligations ordered by the releasing authority.
  • Assists in security operations during riots or disturbances, arrests and transports offenders, assists with out‑of‑state transfers, and collaborates with other agencies when required.
  • Conducts periodic screenings for drug and alcohol use by offenders.
  • Assists probationers with compliance with the Mary Rippy Violent Crime Registration Act and Sex Offender Registration, if applicable.
Level Descriptors

Level I: Basic level where incumbents perform entry‑level duties involved in the supervision of probationers, parolees, and inmates in re‑entry programs.

Level II: Career level where incumbents perform a variety of professional probation and parole duties at the full performance level, including supervision of probationers, parolees, and inmates in pre‑entry programs. Some responsibility may also be assigned for providing training and guidance to others.

Level III: Specialist level where incumbents serve as a subject‑matter expert in a specific area of evidence‑based practice such as motivational interviewing, assessment, or transition planning; provide direct cognitive programming and supervise offenders who present complex behavioral management issues.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Competencies

Level I: Knowledge of laws, regulations, procedures, evidence‑based practices, community resources, re‑entry services, report writing, investigation techniques, and basic law‑enforcement practices. Ability to establish effective relationships, locate suitable employment, motivate clients, manage caseloads, testify in court, communicate effectively, and use electronic technology.

Level II: Similar to Level I with additional experience in correctional casework or equivalent; ability to provide training and guidance to others.

Level III: Similar to Level II with added expertise in a specific evidence‑based area, consultation, training, mentoring, and oversight of other staff.

Education And Experience

Level I: Statutory requirements of 57 O.S. 515:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with at least twenty‑four semester hours in psychology, sociology, social work, criminology, education, criminal justice administration, penology, or police science.

Level II: Bachelor’s degree as above plus two years of correctional experience in social casework involving classification, assessment, or field supervision of probationers and parolees, and/or inmates; or a master’s degree in one of the fields with one year of required experience.

Level III: Bachelor’s degree as above plus four years of correctional experience in social casework involving classification, assessment, or field supervision of probationers, parolees, and/or inmates; or a master’s degree with one year of required experience.
