Position Overview

The First Shift Fabricator is a versatile fabrication position combining assembly, welding, and basic machining skills in a custom job shop environment. This role requires the ability to interpret complex drawings, perform various welding processes, complete precision assemblies, and operate basic machine tools as needed to support production requirements.

Key Responsibilities Assembly Operations
  • Read and interpret complex mechanical assembly drawings, exploded views, and detailed blueprints
  • Understand and follow assembly sequences and procedures
  • Work from Bills of Materials (BOMs) to verify all components
  • Verify proper fit and function of assembled components
  • Maintain accurate assembly documentation and build records
  • Install mechanical components including bearings, bushings, and hardware
  • Use precision measuring equipment to verify critical dimensions
  • Complete assembly inspection reports and maintain quality records
  • Assist in developing assembly procedures for new products
Systems Assembly
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Understand and follow hydraulic and pneumatic system diagrams
  • Assemble and test hydraulic systems including cylinders, valves, and power units
  • Install and troubleshoot pneumatic systems including actuators, valves, and air preparation units
  • Perform electrical assembly including sensor installation, basic wiring, and component mounting
  • Test assembled systems for proper operation and leak‑free performance
  • Document system testing results and verification procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness standards for fluid power systems
  • Collaborate with engineering on system optimization
  • Troubleshoot basic system issues during assembly
Welding Operations
  • Perform MIG, TIG, and stick welding in various positions
  • Weld various materials including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
  • Read and interpret welding symbols and specifications
  • Set up and adjust welding equipment for optimal performance
  • Perform pre and post‑weld preparation and cleanup
  • Complete weld inspections and maintain quality documentation
  • Follow proper heat control and distortion prevention practices
  • Maintain welding equipment and workspace
Machine Shop Support
  • Operate basic machine tools (drill press, saw, grinder) as needed
  • Assist machinists with basic setup and material handling
  • Perform simple machining operations when required
  • Maintain awareness of machining processes to support assembly needs
  • Follow proper machine shop safety procedures
  • Basic understanding of CNC operations to support workflow
Material Handling
  • Safely operate forklift for material movement and staging
  • Load and unload delivery vehicles as needed
  • Transport assembled components and raw materials between work areas
  • Properly secure and transport finished assemblies
  • Maintain awareness of shop traffic and personnel
  • Complete daily forklift inspection checklist
  • Follow all material handling safety procedures
  • Assist in maintaining organized material storage areas
Quality & Documentation
  • Follow quality control procedures and maintain records
  • Complete in‑process inspection of welds and assemblies
  • Document any non‑conformance issues
  • Maintain material traceability records
  • Follow ISO quality standards as applicable
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years experience in welding and assembly
  • Current welding certifications (AWS or equivalent)
  • Current forklift certification and demonstrated safe operation experience
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex mechanical assembly drawings, detailed blueprints with GD&T, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, hydraulic and pneumatic system diagrams
