JOB SUMMARY

The Mechanic repairs and maintains vehicles and equipment. This is accomplished by scheduling and completing preventive maintenance and routine activities such as changing oil, filters, and tires, checking lights and fluids, rotating tires, repairing wiring, maintaining brakes, greasing parts, inventory of parts and fluids, and housekeeping of the entire work area and garage.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Preventive Maintenance
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on city vehicles and equipment, ensuring they operate safely and efficiently.
  • Inspect and service fluids, brakes, tires, and electrical components, including changing oil and filters, replacing lights and batteries, and conducting comprehensive system checks.
  • Document all preventive maintenance work orders accurately through the city's work order system to track service history and ensure compliance with maintenance schedules.
Vehicle and Equipment Repair
  • Diagnose and repair city vehicles and equipment by reviewing work orders, identifying issues, and performing necessary repairs.
  • Replace and repair critical components such as belts, mud flaps, brakes, hydraulics, hoses, batteries, and starters to maintain operational readiness.
  • Ensure all repairs meet safety and operational standards, minimizing equipment downtime and extending the lifespan of city assets.
Parts and Material Handling
  • Order and retrieve necessary parts and materials to complete repairs, ensuring timely and efficient maintenance operations.
  • Pick up and deliver vehicles to various departments and make service calls as needed to support city operations.
Shop Maintenance and Organization
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment by ensuring all bays are cleaned, trash and debris are properly disposed of, and floors are swept regularly.
  • Follow safety protocols for handling and disposing of used supplies, fluids, and hazardous materials.
Record-Keeping and Compliance
  • Accurately document work performed on vehicles, machinery, and equipment in the city's work order system to ensure proper tracking and reporting.
  • Install city logos on vehicles and equipment, ensuring compliance with branding and identification standards.
Emergency and On-Call Support
  • Participate in the on-call rotation every two weeks to provide emergency maintenance and repair services as needed.
  • Prepare city vehicles and equipment for severe weather and emergency situations, including installing tire chains and ensuring emergency vehicles remain operational.
Team Collaboration and Assistance
  • Assist other crews and work teams as needed, supporting city operations across multiple departments.
  • Work collaboratively with other mechanics and staff to troubleshoot complex issues and improve overall maintenance efficiency.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned that fall within the scope of the job functions.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of related work experience.
KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of departmental practices and systems.
  • Skilled in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Skilled in using computers and smart devices for data entry, work orders, and correspondence.
  • Ability to organize, and communicate effectively and professionally.
  • Ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
  • Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or tractors.
  • Ability to use or repair heavy or complex machinery, such as construction equipment.
  • Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • The candidate must have a valid, US driver’s license
  • Requires a valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain within one (1) year
  • ASE Certification (A or T) desired
