Position Duties- Under the supervision of the Intelligence & Investigative Division Director, conduct administrative and criminal investigations within various divisions and units of DPSCS.
- Receive allegations and conduct confidential investigations of criminal activity and serious misconduct.
- Interview complainants, victims, witnesses, and individuals under investigation to gather information using approved interview and interrogation methods.
- Identify and collect physical evidence and report related information using standard evidence collection tools.
- Compose clear, logical, impartial, and properly documented criminal and administrative investigation reports.
Education
:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
Experience
:
Two years of investigative work as an Internal Investigation Detective, Provisional; or two years of comparable law enforcement investigative experience.
- The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police Training Commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3‑207.
- Candidates may substitute education from an accredited college or university at the rate of 60 credit hours, including at least 15 credit hours of criminal justice courses, for up to one year of the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in special investigations or military police classifications or specialty codes in the criminal justice field at the rate of two years of military experience for one year of required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience involving allegations of misconduct or suspected criminal activity by employees.
- Experience preparing criminal and administrative investigation reports.
This recruitment is limited to applicants who currently possess or have possessed in the past three years Law Enforcement (Police) Certification from the Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commission.
Police Officer Recertification
: 3 years or less since last certified as a Police Officer, per Code of Maryland Regulation /Section B3.
- Must possess and maintain a current Maryland certification as a Police Officer.
- May be assigned duties requiring operation of a motor vehicle; a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in Maryland is required.
The ideal candidate must be fluent in spoken and written English and effectively communicate with diverse populations. Professional fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, or other languages is a plus.
- Must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Police Training Commission for police officers.
- U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Complete background investigation, oral interview, physical examination, polygraph and psychological evaluations.
- Medical examination required to determine ability to perform job‑related functions.
- Qualification to bear firearms and demonstrate safe use and periodic proficiency.
- 24‑hour call‑in availability and provide reachable telephone number.
- Substance abuse testing as per state regulations.
Applicants must provide sufficient information demonstrating they meet the qualifications before the closing date. Successful candidates will be placed on the employment list for at least one year.
Examination ProcessThe assessment may include rating of education, training, and experience. A written assessment measuring report‑writing skills is required for selected candidates.
