Introduction
The Maryland Military Department is looking for candidates to fill our Military Honor Guard Specialist Lead positions. This role is part-time Merit and operates on a compressed work schedule:

Main Purpose of JobThe incumbent serves as a uniformed leader and member of Honor Guard Funeral Details in accordance with MDNG Reg. 600‑25 and Maryland Article 65, Section 6, representing the State of Maryland and the Military Department during burial services for military veterans.
Position Duties- Leads, coordinates, assigns, and reviews tasks of team members performing Military Funeral Ceremonies.
- Conducts regular inspections of team uniforms, equipment, vehicles, weapons, and supplies.
- Performs specialized team positions such as pall bearing, folding, and/or presentation of the United States Flag according to standard procedures.
- Executes military drill and ceremony maneuvers.
- Operates, maintains, and safeguards military weapons.
- Travels frequently within the assigned geographical area.
- Prepares various reports.
- Conducts drill and ceremony training and instruction for funeral details.
Education:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high‑school equivalency certificate.
Experience:
One year serving as a uniformed honor guard at burial services for veterans.
Note:
Candidates may substitute additional experience as a uniformed honor guard at burial services for veterans on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
Employees performing duties requiring motor vehicle operation must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland.
Special Requirements- Must be an active or retired member of the Maryland National Guard or a retired member in good standing from the Armed Forces of the United States.
- Successfully complete an eight‑hour gun safety and usage weapons class.
- Successfully complete one‑hundred‑forty hours of honor guard training, including eighty hours at the Army or Air Force Honor Guard School.
- Completed Military Basic Training.
- Must pass all physical fitness standards, appearance, and training requirements set forth in Army Regulation 600‑9 and Air Force Instruction 40‑502.
- Must possess practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms and demonstrate this periodically.
- Subject to substance‑abuse testing in accordance with Maryland Regulations 17.04.09.
- Must not be under any disciplinary action and must pass regular background investigations, including criminal history checks.
- Work on holidays and weekends.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Work outside in extreme weather conditions and have reliable transportation to the duty office.
