Water Plant Mechanic

Job Title

Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of system components to ensure uninterrupted operation of the City's reverse osmosis water plant, raw water supply wells and off-site storage tanks. Coordinates the work of contractors, professionals and vendors providing technical assistance. Performs related work as required. Reports to the Water Plant Manager.

Performs skilled mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of water treatment plant and wellfield equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, piping systems, and related mechanical infrastructure.

Conducts preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical systems to ensure reliable operation of water treatment processes and distribution facilities.

Diagnoses equipment malfunctions using visual inspections, diagnostic tools, and operational data, and implements appropriate repairs to restore system functionality.

Performs alignment, lubrication, rebuilding, and replacement of mechanical components such as bearings, seals, shafts, couplings, and pump assemblies.

Assists with installation, modification, and commissioning of new mechanical equipment and system upgrades within treatment facilities and remote sites.

Responds to emergency maintenance calls and operational failures to minimize system downtime and restore critical water service operations.

Operates hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and specialized mechanical testing equipment in the performance of maintenance and repair activities.

Assists with inspection, maintenance, and repair of chemical feed systems, piping networks, and process mechanical equipment to support water treatment operations.

Performs routine inspections of plant and wellfield equipment to identify wear, leaks, inefficiencies, or potential failures and recommends corrective actions.

Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, parts usage, and equipment condition in accordance with departmental procedures and regulatory requirements.

Coordinates with operators, supervisors, contractors, and vendors to support maintenance scheduling, equipment repairs, and system improvements.

Ensures compliance with all safety policies and procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Supports preventive maintenance programs by completing scheduled inspections and servicing of critical mechanical systems and assets.

Performs welding, fabrication, and mechanical modifications as needed to repair or improve plant and system components.

Performs routine office work as required, including but not limited to attending meetings, answering the telephone, typing reports and records, entering computer data, copying and filing documents, etc.

Performs other related duties as required.

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent, and vocational coursework in welding, electrical and mechanical repair, pneumatics, hydraulics, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), programmable logic controller (PLC) and telemetry systems, etc.

Requires a minimum of five (5) years of verifiable experience in water treatment plant maintenance or related mechanical, instrumentation, or electrical maintenance.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Requires a valid Florida driver's license.

This is a Category A position for the purposes of Emergency Management. Employees in this category may be assigned to work a variety of schedules, including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations. Category A employees are required to stay on premises during a declared state of emergency, or as otherwise mandated.

Knowledge of Job:
Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the City of Dunedin as they pertain to the performance of essential duties of the Water Plant Mechanic. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has thorough knowledge of the principles, theories, practices and methodologies of water distribution systems and their maintenance and repair, and other fields applicable to the requirements of the position.

Understands specific City and County ordinances as they apply to the duties and responsibilities of the position. Clearly understands any occupational hazards and adheres to all safety precautions inherent in performing the essential functions of the work.
