Durango School District is accepting applications for an Educational Interpreter for the 2026/2027 school year. The position is assigned to the student(s), not to a specific school location. Must hold a Colorado Department of Education Educational Interpreter Authorization, or be able to obtain by the start date of this position. Work Calendar follows Student Service Provider 181 days with additional 3 weeks for the Extended School Year (ESY) Summer Program.

The position begins August 17, 2026.

Summary

Licensed Educational Interpreter:
Assist in facilitating communication between deaf/hard of hearing (D/hh) students and hearing staff and students by using sign language appropriate for learning level of student(s); adapts language and materials to meet the needs of D/hh; assist in providing tutoring for academic classes and lessons; provides information to hearing staff and students to assist in better understanding the needs of D/hh students.

Develops and promotes good community relations among various community and school clientele. This position includes three weeks of ESY work in the summer with assigned student(s).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensures the student receives and understands communication presented in an educational setting through the interpreting process.
  • Works with assigned student(s) to learn, and progress in their proficiency with, American Sign Language (ASL) if the student is not already proficient in ASL.
  • Develops familiarity with general studies to which assigned in order to interpret more effectively and prepare for instructional assistance.
  • Assists in providing tutorial services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students reinforcing concepts taught in the general education classroom.
  • Follows up on classroom presentations with assessment and reinforcement to ensure no misunderstandings by the students.
  • Assists instructors and counselors by monitoring behavior during the school day; follows through with behavior programs established by instructors, counselors, and student service providers.
  • Discusses assignment-related information with other members of the education team, (e.g., other educational interpreters, teachers, supervisors) who are directly responsible for the educational program of the student for whom the interpreter delivers service.
  • Assists the student’s teachers and case manager with communication with the student’s parents/guardians. Communicates with the student’s parents/guardians about interpreting services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
  • Assure the safety and welfare of students including necessary actions to ensure students are supervised at all times.
  • Demonstrate faithfulness and promptness in attendance at work.
  • Submit required reports promptly at the times specified.
  • Demonstrate care for and protection of School District property.
  • Report suspected child abuse or neglect as required by law.
  • Use the District’s internet and e‑mail system as specified in Policy.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent or their designees.
Education and Training

Minimum requirement: AA in ASL/Interpreting or equivalent.

Experience

Educational interpreting experience is preferred, but may not be necessary for hiring. Must demonstrate extensive knowledge of the various signing systems to include Exact English, Signed English, American Sign Language, finger spelling, and silent mouthing.

Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations

Valid driver’s license required. Must have Colorado Department of Education Educational Interpreter Authorization or be eligible to obtain by the start date. Ability to communicate effectively in various signing systems:
