About the Work Unit

The Regional Safety Specialist is part of the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 5 Safety Team in southwestern Colorado. This team supports Region‑wide safety initiatives as established by the Region Transportation Director (RTD) and the Regional Leadership Team (RLT). The Safety Team gathers, analyzes, interprets, monitors, and reports safety trends and safety‑related information and supports the Department‑level safety initiatives as directed by the Office of Transportation Safety.

the Position

As the Regional Safety Specialist, classified as Safety Specialist III, you will provide staff oversight to daily operations and activities as they relate to employee health and safety, as guided by the Region Safety Officer (RSO). This includes identifying and evaluating hazardous conditions and practices, developing and implementing prevention methodologies, ensuring procedures and programs related to employee safety and health are providing value and being followed, advising and educating others on hazard identification and prevention methods, and measuring and evaluating overall safety process effectiveness.

This position supports the current statewide safety process called “Excellence in Safety” and all corresponding initiatives and programs as directed by the Office of Transportation Safety.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Implement and maintain a program for identification of hazards evaluation and assessment of the probability and severity of loss events and accidents.
  • Conduct hazard analyses, interpretation and documentation of results for the Region Safety Officer (RSO), Region Transportation Director (RTD), Region Leadership Team (RLT) and employees.
  • Conduct reviews of processes and operations for potential failure modes and their causes and effects.
  • Review, compile, analyze, and interpret data from accident and loss prevention reports, along with other sources, regarding injuries, illnesses, and damage to determine causes and trends.
  • Provide safety bulletins and other information for dissemination at meetings and via e‑mail.
  • Implement and maintain a tracking database program designed to reduce or eliminate hazards such as roadside hazards, Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements, sight specific project requirements, etc. preferably before they occur, by reducing or eliminating the cause of exposures, accidents, and loss events.
