Professional Engineer , Major Projects Construction Lead – Durango

Overview

Applications will be considered from residents and non‑residents of Colorado. New employees to the State will be paid biweekly; there are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

The Major Projects Team in Durango oversees and manages Region 5’s major projects, including design, clearance coordination, advertisement, and construction.

This licensed engineering position serves as the construction lead or Project Engineer for large, complex transportation projects using various contracting methods.

• Act as Chief Engineer’s authorized representative, responsible for the administrative completion of transportation projects.
• Apply professional engineering license and current engineering principles to new construction or reconstruction of intersections, corridor widening, roadway surface treatment, drainage, irrigation, and structures.
• Certify contractor compliance with contract, plans, and specifications through detailed inspections and proper documentation.
• Develop and evaluate roadway construction plans using engineering design software.
• Prepare accurate accounts of project progress, pay quantities, activities, correspondence, and problems.
• Support Major Projects through risk analysis, cost estimating, schedule development, communication, coordination, investigation, and other actions for successful delivery.
• Represent CDOT in meetings with public, local/state entities, businesses, railroads, special interest groups, and utilities.
• Organize meetings and communicate with CDOT personnel to exchange information, ensure timely responses, and request clarifications regarding project development.
• Participate on committees, task forces, and steering committees to help CDOT implement improvements.
• Provide direction and resolve conflicts among specialty units, perform project scheduling, and coordinate multiple efforts to meet advertisement dates.
• Support or lead the Major Projects Team through the development of plans, alternatives comparison, and technical criteria development.
• Manage consultants and local agencies to accomplish project completions.
• Train and mentor less experienced staff and consultants.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Primarily Monday‑Friday schedule with flexible hours. Approximately 60 % of work is field‑based; 40 % office. Regular travel within Region and overnight travel throughout Colorado as required.

• Current, valid Professional Engineer license from Colorado State or another U.S. state (must obtain Colorado license within six months of hire if out‑of‑state).

• Must pass pre‑employment screening including background checks.
• Valid driver’s license required for roles requiring vehicle operation.

• Proven success in major transportation projects, ≥3‑5 years of Professional Engineer civil/transportation experience.
• Strong understanding of project delivery methods, NEPA, CDOT manuals, AASHTO, MUTCD, and other industry standards.
• Leadership and mentoring skills; ability to oversee consultants and contractors.
• Strong project management skills including budgeting, scheduling, and multitasking.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Fluency in MS Office, Google Apps, SAP, Bentley OR, PMWeb, Project Wise, etc.
