Deputy Clerk-Licensing

As Deputy Clerk-Licensing, you'll help manage the City of Durango's licensing operations while providing clear, responsive customer service to businesses, community members, and City employees. You'll oversee business, liquor, and marijuana license applications and renewals, support licensing compliance and reporting, and supervise the Licensing and Customer Service Specialist. You'll also contribute to City Council and board meetings, elections, public outreach, and other City Clerk's Office functions.

Guided by the City Clerk's Office philosophy, "We Exist to Assist," you'll join a collaborative team that values accuracy, enjoys helping others, and looks for ways to continually improve the services we provide. The starting pay for this position is $49,913 per year, with opportunities for growth up to $69,878 per year based on long-term growth and performance within the role.

City of Durango's Trail to Excellence The City of Durango is a purpose-driven organization with more than 400 full-time and 300 part-time and seasonal employees across 15 departments, all working together to provide a wide range of services that keep our community running every day. From public safety and utilities to parks and recreation, our team is dedicated to delivering high-quality services that enhance the lives of all who live, work, and visit here.

At the city, we focus on continually improving how we work and serve the community. This effort is called the Trail to Excellence (T2E), and every employee plays a part in it. Whether you work outdoors, in an office, or lead a team, your daily efforts connect to the city's mission of providing excellent service and reaching the city's vision of being a multigenerational community that is authentic, diverse, engaged, thriving, and environmentally responsible.

The full details of this vision are outlined in the city's strategic plan. As a member of our team, your work will be meaningful because:

  • Your ideas help shape citywide improvements.
  • The work you do ties directly into measurable goals.
  • You'll be part of a system that values collaboration, innovation, and results.

We're looking for team members who share our core values of teamwork, dependability, professionalism, service, respect, innovation, and wellbeing — and who are excited to make a difference in the community we serve.

What You'll Do in This Role:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations for the City's licensing programs, including business, liquor, marijuana, and special event liquor permits.
  • Guide and support the Licensing and Customer Service Specialist with daily tasks, work schedules, and training.
  • Help community members and business owners understand licensing rules and application steps through clear, responsive service in person, over the phone, and online.
  • Handle financial responsibilities such as collecting license fees, balancing payments, and ordering necessary office supplies.
  • Gather licensing data and prepare clear reports and statistics to share with City Council, City staff, and the public.
  • Support City Council and board meetings, including recording and preparing official meeting minutes.
  • Support City Clerk's Office projects and functions, including local elections, public records requests, and cross-training in Municipal Court processes so you can provide coverage when needed.
  • May assume duties of the City Clerk or Chief Deputy Clerk when they are out of the office.
  • Represent the City professionally and build strong working relationships with other departments, community members, and outside agencies.

You Have:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative experience, including at least one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) certification through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the skills needed to perform the role successfully.

You Will Succeed in This Role If You:

  • Enjoy helping people navigate processes and requirements and can make complex information easier to understand.
  • Are organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple applications, deadlines, records, and priorities.
  • Use good judgment and work independently while knowing when to seek guidance on unusual or complex situations.
  • Are comfortable learning and applying regulations and staying current as licensing requirements and practices change.
  • Enjoy supporting and developing others through clear direction, training, and day-to-day leadership.

What We Can Offer You:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Ample personal time off (PTO) and 11 paid holidays.
  • 401(a) retirement plan and optional deferred compensation plan.
  • Basic life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) coverage.
  • Long-term disability coverage.
  • Paid Family and Medical Leave (FMLA).
  • Access to Employee Assistance Program
