Job Summary
The Restoration and Building Carpenter helps maintain all AHR and subsidiary Durango based buildings, facilities and properties throughout the Durango, Colorado area. This position will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our facilities by performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks. Work can include wood framing, sanding, staining, and finishing along with electrical and plumbing repair.
Ideal candidates have an aptitude for, and some experience working in the carpentry or construction trade and have the ability and desire to hone their skills working on historic structures, and other railroad artifacts/material. Your primary goal will be to maintain a safe and functional environment for employees and visitors.
- Regularly inspect, maintain, and repair all Durango-based buildings, equipment, landscaping, and appliances to ensure proper function, safety, and maintenance.
- Assist with installation/repair of plumbing, furnaces, generators, AC/DC electrical.
- Complete structural and finish carpentry work.
- When needed, take a lead/supporting role in the re-design and full remodeling of existing facilities.
- Work in tandem with other Facilities employees and Contractors to ensure smooth and communicative teamwork.
- Establish safeguards and response plans to handle fire‑related or other property‑based emergencies and draft exit routes with appropriate signage in coordination with the Public Safety department.
- Diagnose problems and facilitate the timely repair of company owned structures including but not limited to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, exterior/interior aesthetics, and structural items.
- Work with other staff and leadership by communicating any risks, structural issues, or maintenance challenges that may exist.
- Clean and prepare vacated buildings and offices when needed to accommodate new occupants.
- Regularly communicate with company leadership and fulfill deadline requests and ad‑hoc tasks when necessary.
- Follow all safety and company policies and procedures.
- Assist in OSHA and Safety inspections.
- Document repairs and expenses as required by management.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Proven experience in facility maintenance, structural repair, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge in mechanics, welding, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC systems.
- Ability to follow blueprints and carpentry plans.
- Experience in woodworking including cabinet, framing and finish work.
- Familiarity with residential electrical, residential plumbing and general home‑related repair skills.
- Proficiency in using maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve maintenance issues efficiently.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Clear driving record and ability to operate tractors, trucks, trailers, man-lifts, and other equipment.
- Ability & desire to perform physically demanding work within a varying work schedule.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- This position is safety sensitive and will be required to pass a pre‑employment drug test.
- Working in and around rail yard within industrial shop environment.
- Occasional to frequent work in tight spaces (attic or crawl space), high areas (rooftop or scaffolding), and in varying climate conditions.
- A varied schedule sometimes requires full‑time hours with overtime work, or to be on‑call and available after hours, when needed.
- Significant time spent in and around construction projects or zones.
- Ability to regularly lift at least 50 pounds.
