Vacancy is a lead Highway Maintenance Specialist (TM II) with Traffic and Safety Signing/Striping located in Durango, Colorado. Base pay for this position is typically $58,872-$64,752/year. This location is eligible for an additional $500/month housing stipend. Total annual compensation is typically between $64,872-$70,752 ($58,872-$64,752 base pay plus $6,000 housing stipend).

Description Of Job

This Highway Maintenance Lead Specialist position, classified as Transportation Maintenance II, leads Traffic and Safety Signing/Striping Crews. The unit installs and maintains highway striping, markings and signage to promote safety for motorists and CDOT personnel. This role involves skilled heavy construction equipment operation and heavy manual labor under hazardous conditions. The position is responsible for maintaining facilities and ensuring equipment is safe and operable.

Responsibilities
  • Performs lead work over crews performing roadway striping, thermal plastic and stencil markings on Interstates, US and Colorado Highways and frontage roads in accordance with MUTCD and M&S standards.
  • Develops traffic control plans utilizing the MUTCD and provides advance warnings and traffic control in work zones to ensure a safe work area for signing/striping operations.
  • Manages inventories of signs and paint products to ensure adequate supply for the season and minimal carryover.
  • Performs lead work and provides guidance to crews installing, maintaining, repairing, and inspecting class I, II and III signs.
  • Plans daily activities in the assigned area; develops work plans for employees, reviews progress, identifies training needs, provides on-the-job training, mentoring, and performance feedback; conducts tailgate safety talks.
  • Ensures attendance at required training and performs worksite, night, and roadway inspections.
  • Leads and assists in snow and ice control, including snow removal, traction application, ice control, stockpiling, and snow fence installation.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment, buildings, and grounds.
  • Completes required paperwork and reports; uses SAP to enter work orders and timesheets.
  • Trims/removes trees; removes graffiti.
  • Uses a variety of light to heavy equipment; ensures safe equipment and PPE use.
  • Assists other patrols as needed; performs other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
  • Exposure to loud noise; fumes, odors, gases, dusts; PPE required.
  • Work with chemicals; some positions require respirators.
  • Work near heavy traffic; heights of ~10–20 feet; drive CDOT vehicles.
  • Overtime including weekends/holidays; some night/weekend positions exist.
  • Extreme temperatures and elevations up to 12,000 feet; 40-hour work week with possible overtime.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions; computer use required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three (3) years of experience in road/highway maintenance.
  • Examples of road/highway maintenance experience include pothole repair, paving operations, operating heavy equipment, striping/marking, sign installation/maintenance, etc.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CDL Class A or B with no air brake restriction that allows operation within Colorado.
  • Cdl from outside Colorado must be transferable or eligible to drive in Colorado by hire; transfer within 30 days of relocation.
