Department Information

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

Compensation

Base pay $58,872-$64,752 per year. Housing stipend $500 monthly, for total $64,872-$70,752 annually.

Job Description

This Highway Maintenance Lead Specialist (Transportation Maintenance II) leads and oversees Traffic and Safety Signing/Striping crews, installing and maintaining highway striping, markings, and signage to promote a safer traveling environment. The position performs skilled heavy construction equipment operation and heavy manual labor under hazardous and adverse conditions. The specialist maintains facilities in near‑original condition and ensures all equipment is safe and operable.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs lead work over crews performing roadway striping, thermal plastic and stencil markings on Interstates, US and Colorado Highways and frontage roads in accordance with MUTCD and M&S standards;
  • Develops traffic control plans utilizing the MUTCD and provides advance warnings and traffic control throughout work zones for safety;
  • Manages inventories of signs and paint products to ensure adequate supply for the season and minimal carry over at season end;
  • Provides guidance to crews performing installation, maintenance, repair and inspection of class I, II and III signs;
  • Plans and schedules activities, reviews progress, identifies training needs, provides performance feedback, and conducts safety talks;
  • Ensures patrol attends required training, performs inventory inspections, and maintains safety compliance;
  • Leads snow and ice control activities, including snow removal, traction application, ice control, stock piling, and fence installation and repair;
  • Leads maintenance and repair of equipment, buildings, and grounds upkeep;
  • Completes required paperwork and reports, and uses SAP for work orders and timesheet entries;
  • Trims and removes trees, removes graffiti;
  • Uses a variety of light to heavy equipment;
  • Ensures use of proper PPE and equipment;
  • Assists other patrols as needed;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
  • Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, dust, etc.;
  • Requirement to use appropriate personal protective equipment;
  • Work with chemicals and cleaning products, sometimes requiring respirators;
  • Close proximity to heavy traffic, use of ladders and scissor lifts for 10–20 feet;
  • Operation of heavy equipment such as backhoe, tractor, bucket truck, forklift, skid steer, loader, aerial devices;
  • Driving CDOT vehicles;
  • Exposure to high voltage (over 600 V) and electrical shock;
  • Night and weekend shifts, emergency response, and overtime;
  • Work in extreme temperatures and at elevations up to 12,000 ft;
  • Use of computers for daily duties;
  • Average work week 40 hours, with periodic overtime;
  • Must read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three (3) years of experience in road/highway maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed;
  • State service experience related to duties of this position;
  • Experience scheduling and planning daily work activities for subordinates;
  • Knowledge of CDOT traffic operations, equipment, policies, and regulations; working knowledge of MUTCD;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of emergency response guidelines and relevant transportation standards;
  • Holding a Colorado CDL Class A or B with hazardous materials, tanker endorsements;
  • Extensive experience operating and training others on heavy equipment and hand tools;
  • Strong safety commitment, communication skills, leadership and mentoring;
