Position Summary
La Plata County Road & Bridge Flaggers. Duties include traffic control, installation and repair of traffic control devices. Current Colorado Flagger certification preferred and valid driver’s license required. Seasonal full‑time position May–November, $20.81 per hour, with vacation and sick hours.

Maintains and operates light equipment used in County road maintenance and construction projects. Performs road maintenance as necessary.
Essential Job Functions- Provide traffic services including setting appropriate signs and traffic control devices per the Manual of Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) in roadway work zones.
- Locate and place appropriate signs and traffic devices in work areas and route traffic in construction work zones.
- Place and remove traffic counters.
- Operate light equipment such as power broom, mover, and related equipment.
- Check and report damage to County roads and road signs.
- Assist with road striping, drive pilot car, and refill striper as needed.
- Perform road sign maintenance and installation (replace signs, make signs, cut posts, attach and install signs).
- Provide information to motorists and non‑motorists about detours and general road construction.
- Offer clear driver guidance to the public, including operation of pilot vehicle.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED; or
- Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid driver’s license.
- Colorado Department of Transportation or ATSSA Flagger certificate preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Traffic safety and construction work zones.
- All applicable safety rules and regulations for operation of light construction equipment.
- Safe use of hand tools used in road construction and maintenance.
Skills:
- Communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
- Operating, maintaining, and performing routine repairs on assigned equipment.
Abilities:
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
- Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Safely operate all assigned equipment.
Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, extreme cold, wet or humid conditions, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. Tasks require sitting, handling, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting up to 50 lbs routinely, and occasionally more than 100 lbs. Working time may require irregular hours, on‑call status, and/or shift times.
