Job Description

Durango School District is accepting applications for Small Vehicle/Mini Bus Drivers for the 2026/2027 school year. Successful completion of District’s School Bus Driver Training Program is required. This posting is for a role that involves transporting students in a small bus. Standard hours are from 6:00 am to 8:30 am and from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm, totaling five hours a day, Monday‑Friday, for nine months a year, with opportunities to work additional driving activities.

Includes full insurance benefits at 24 hours per week. Begins August 17, 2026.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Transport passengers safely and timely in all weather conditions. Educate students on bus rules. Maintain positive student relations. Enforce district regulations regarding student discipline. Communicate with transportation personnel and parents about student behavior that requires redirection. Report incidents requiring administrator notification and parent notification.
  • Assist students, as needed, with loading and unloading the bus, including wheelchairs, strollers, and other equipment. Secure passengers and properly fasten safety devices, car seats, lap belts, and T‑straps.
  • Execute a pre‑trip inspection of the bus following Colorado Department of Transportation and District guidelines. Maintain fluid levels and complete post‑trip inspections. Keep the bus interior and exterior clean and mirrors and windows clear. Fuel vehicles according to departmental guidelines.
  • Communicate via radio and in person for routine, urgent, and emergency situations. Report unsafe route and bus stop conditions to the Scheduler/Dispatcher.
  • Complete required paperwork, including monthly reports, route sheets, ride rosters, accident and hazard reports, and work requests for vehicle repairs.
  • Verify route times at the beginning and throughout the year to maintain schedule accuracy. Provide information to the scheduler for updating routes and maps.
  • Manage special needs of special education students and health situations aboard the bus.
  • Receive training to maintain certifications required by the CDE, DOT, and District, including license renewal and other training. Execute biannual emergency evacuations of students and assist in emergencies.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
  • Must complete District Driver Training. Passenger vehicle driving experience and experience working with children preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS
  • Criminal background check required for hire.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required within 90 days after hire.
  • Successful completion of District’s Small Bus/Vehicle Driver Training Program required for hire.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must pass the annual written test.
  • Must pass the annual driving performance test.
  • Must have a record of safe driving per motor vehicle record check.
  • Must pass drug/alcohol screen per Board Policy.
TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) in English. Knowledge of city and county road networks and locations of schools in the district. Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job. Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills. Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations. Work with students from diverse backgrounds and abilities. Knowledge of Colorado and Federal laws related to student transportation.

Promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies, and department procedures. Recognize the importance of safety, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, use appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
