Job Description

Durango School District is accepting applications for Bus Monitor in the Transportation Department to assist bus drivers with student supervision while in route, maintain student conduct reports, and assist bus driver with passenger safety during daily routes. This position is 5 hours per day.

The Bus Monitors typically work from 6:0am through 8:30 am in the morning. In the afternoon the Bus Monitor starts at 2:30pm and gets done at 5:00pm. Position begins August 08/17/2026.

For the 26/27 SY, this position includes a one-time $1125 bonus for staff newly hired to the school district! (pro-rated for late start).

SUMMARY: Assist the bus driver in managing student conduct and ensuring passenger safety during daily routes. Assist with student needs during transport.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The frequency and percentage of time of duties may vary based on assignment.

  • Assist the bus driver in maintaining safe student conduct by monitoring student behavior, helping set a positive tone, redirecting inappropriate behavior.
  • Assist students, as needed, in loading and unloading the bus. Load and unload passengers in wheelchairs, strollers, etc. using the bus lift. Maneuver chairs on ramps, curbs, and inside buildings.
  • When working with students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504’s, coordinate with the school staff and Student Support Services departments to be familiar with the plans and student needs as it pertains to transportation.
  • Secure passengers’ wheelchairs, strollers, etc. and properly fasten all protective safety devices, car seats, lap belts, and T-straps.
  • Assist in maintaining emergency card book for passengers.
  • Completes and submits required paperwork/documentation as required and ensures the confidentiality of student information. Provide written documentation to appropriate personnel regarding violations of the student code.
  • Assist driver with emergency evacuation plans and drills. Attend training and other required meetings.
  • Assist the driver during emergency situations or mechanical failures; may perform first aid, including CPR, in emergency situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: None required. Experience working with children preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: CPR and First Aid training preferred at hire; required two months after hire. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training required within three months of hire.

  • Communicate effectively in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies, and building/department procedures.
  • Ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Ability to utilize non-violent and physical intervention techniques.
  • Knowledge of first aide skills

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
