Coordinator of Disability Services

Southeastern Oklahoma State University's Student Development invites applications for the position of Head Coordinator of Disability Services.

The Coordinator for Disability Services reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs. This position interacts daily with students and staff and frequently with faculty, administrators and community professionals concerning the needs of faculty, staff and students with disabilities and disability related accommodations.

The Coordinator of Disability Services assures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA), Title Il of ADA and other federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to persons with disabilities. Responsible for providing and coordinating services to employees and students with disabilities in regard to accommodations and serves as the resource person at the University for individuals with physical and/or learning disabilities;

works with faculty, staff, community organizations (Vocational Rehabilitation, Texas Rehabilitation Services, Oklahoma School for the Deaf, etc.) and the general public to meet the needs of employees and students with disabilities. Receives requests and reviews documentation, discusses the impact of the disability in the job or academic setting and the job description, verifies the disability, makes a case-by-case determination of need, and arranges reasonable accommodations.

Maintains confidential files, records of accommodations, and emergency evacuation lists.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coordinates and provides services to students with disabilities in the areas of academic accommodations, housing requests, campus visitor requests, University sponsored travel, University employment, and makes referrals to appropriate University and community resources to help students attain their life and educational goals. Maintains confidential files regarding students, faculty, and staff with disabilities and serves as a facilitator of information for faculty who implement accommodations in the academic setting, and staff who implement accommodations through their provision of various student services.

Work with faculty, staff, and University offices to provide coordinated accommodations and access to all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Train faculty, staff, and University offices to facilitate referrals to the Office of Disability Services. Coordinates and supervises disability services data collection for the University and produces emergency evacuation lists that detail the class schedule of students that may need evacuation assistance because of a disability.

Promote awareness of services/resources that assist students with disabilities in making a smooth transition to the University and in maintaining a well-balanced University experience. Engage the campus community through disability related educational programming, availability at student and parent orientation events, presentation of staff development sessions, and providing training to frontline staff that frequently interact with students with disabilities. Collaborate with the Vice President for Student Affairs to ensure that students' needs are being met in accordance with federal regulations.

Collaborate with the Director of Human Resources and the Office of Disability Services to ensure that faculty and staff needs are being met in accordance with federal regulations, and to participate as needed in disability related grievance procedures. Collaborate with the Office of Housing and Residence Life to ensure that students' housing needs are met in accordance with federal regulations, and support staff in implementing accommodations.

Assist prospective students who have been referred by University staff, secondary school officials or community resources. Inform students about options for assistive technology and assist with training and resources. Review publications and latest research, and networks with colleagues to stay abreast of legal issues pertaining to students with disabilities. Procure and maintain assistive technology and software and manage the Disability Services Office through the hiring, training, and supervision of student workers.

Facilitate the completion of all appropriate timesheets and track student worker's salary budgets. Serve on the University's ADA Compliance Committee, and other University committees as assigned. Reviews, collaborates, and authorizes all building renovation and construction to ensure proper accessibility standards required by state and federal law have been met, including the ADA Accessibility Guidelines on issues through the Department of Justice.

Consults on all renovation and construction projects in the planning, design, and construction phases.
