Job Description

Job Title:

Au pair required for two boys in Musgrave, KZN.

The children are aged 4 and 9, and the 9-year-old is Autistic (level
1) and has ADHD. The children in question are energetic and curious, creative, and love to spend time outdoors. We are seeking somebody to fetch them from school and spend time with them in the afternoons, as well as to accompany them to extra-curricular activities. The family is seeking full time support as both parents are medical professionals that work long hours.

Main Purpose of the job:

In this role, you will have the opportunity to have a significant impact on the development and livelihoods of these boys. Your responsibilities will include engaging with both boys and planning activities with them; building relationships based on acceptance and trust; and getting to know their special interests while learning how best to engage with each of their unique personalities. The role will also involve assisting with homework and extension programmes.

Collaboration with their teachers and multidisciplinary team will be essential, and the role will include managing school communication as well as tasks and activities related to school. A suitable candidate would be interested in developing a deeper understanding of the boys’ neurodevelopmental profiles, along with the related differences and challenges. A strong interest in and passion for supporting neurodivergent individuals is of utmost importance.

Job Objectives:

  • To develop a trusting relationship with the boys, and provide support in their personal, social and academic development.
  • To step in when the parents need extra support
  • To accompany the children to extra-mural activities.
  • To provide support and companionship to the child to enrich their days
Requirements
  • Experience working with children, particularly those that are neurodivergent.
  • Experience in neurodivergence and autism spectrum disorder are advantageous
  • Fluent in English
  • Punctuality
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable car.
  • A gentle and kind approach to working with children, whilst remaining firm in boundaries is essential.
  • Knowledge of childhood development would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of working from a child-led approach is essential
  • Availability Monday to Friday, from approximately 12h00 to 18h00, as well as one weekend per month. There may also be after-hours work needed on an ad-hoc basis when parents have to work late.
  • Ability to commit to the role long term.

Requirements
General Requirements:
• A valid driver’s license and reliable car – Essential.
• Previous experience supporting young neurodiverse children – Desirable.
• Experience as a facilitator for neurodiverse children – Desirable.
• A heart for long-term commitment (preferably 2 years) – Essential
• Job-Related work experience: • - Previous experience in a role supporting neurodivergent children - Essential. • - Previous experience in teaching - Desirable • - Familiarity with special education strategies, curriculum adaptation, and life skills training. Job-Related Knowledge - Familiarity and knowledge of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - Essential. • - Familiarity with low arousal, child-led, neuro-affirming approach - Essential.

• - Patience, empathy, and a commitment to building a trusting, supportive relationship with the child. • - Flexible and adaptable, able to adjust to the child’s needs and family’s schedule. • - Relevant certifications or qualifications in education, special education, psychology, or related fields – Desirable.

Job-Related Skills:

• - Ability to minimise stress and anxiety for both children by utilising a low arousal approach - Essential. • - Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with the family and other support systems - Essential • - Organisational skills, i.e., ability to implement structure, strong time management imperative - Essential. • - Social, play and life skills – Essential.

• - Relationship building skills – Essential.
