OVERVIEW & PURPOSE
This position is customer service and clerical work at the circulation desk, assisting the public at the Library’s headquarters facility or at a branch. Work includes checking books and other media in and out; assisting patrons in locating books; helping patrons download e‑books and related software; typing, filing, issuing library cards; collecting fees; preparing books for carts; directing volunteer shelving efforts;
preparing materials for programs and displays; answering reference questions; and assisting patrons with computer catalogs and public computers.
- Checks books and materials in and out; empties book drops; helps patrons select materials; provides general assistance with reader’s advisory, reference, and location of library materials.
- Handles patron inquiries in person and over the phone; transfers calls; answers questions; explains library policies.
- Advises patrons on downloading e‑books and related software, and on the use of e‑readers.
- Registers patrons for borrower’s cards; issues replacement cards.
- Computes and collects fees for lost or damaged books and print jobs; makes change; maintains and balances the cash drawer.
- Prepares new books for addition to the collection.
- Organizes books and materials for return to shelves; examines condition and separates items needing mending or repair; sorts by number for shelving; prepares carts for shelving.
- Assigns volunteers to shelving tasks; shelves and straightens shelves as needed.
- Instructs patrons in the use of the catalog and index, computer, scanner, and printer.
- Assists in keeping the circulation desk area and other library areas neat and orderly.
- Designs and sets up library displays.
- Opens or closes the desk and library, empties book drop, depending on shift assignment.
- Completes a minimum of 20 hours of professional development each fiscal year.
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES- Working knowledge of library procedures, methods, materials, and practices.
- Working knowledge of computers, printers, and other equipment; ability to use them in performing duties.
- Working knowledge of circulation, reader’s advisory, and basic library procedures.
- Basic knowledge of the theory and objectives of a public library system.
- Ability to interact with large numbers of the public, volunteers, and staff; to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to perform a variety of tasks with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to type and operate a computer accurately.
Graduation from high school plus courses in office practices and clerical experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, including some experience working with the public and in a library.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSNorth Carolina driver’s license is required.
WORK HOURS & LOCATIONThis position is 19 hours per week. Branch libraries are open 9‑6 Monday through Saturday; weekend work is required.
