Position Information

Play Makers Repertory Company (PRC) is the premiere professional theatre company of North Carolina, serving as a working laboratory for the Department of Dramatic Art and as a nationally recognized cultural destination for UNC and the entire southeast region. PRC manages the planning and oversight of a $3.1 million professional and educational theatre operation. The unit has about 175 staff: 47 employees, 20 independent contractors, 30 work‑study students and up to 100 volunteers.

Approximately 37 employees are seasonal requiring new contracts and university personnel paperwork each season. This unit creates professional artistic programming, student and community engagement activities, and fundraising endeavors. The unit is a program within the Department of Dramatic Art.

Position Summary

The Sound Manager’s primary responsibilities are to provide creative analysis, manage and execute all sound designs for PRC productions, ensuring that the work performed in the Sound Department is executed professionally, efficiently, and safely according to prescribed industry and institutional standards. The Sound Manager is the principal artist that creates and brings to life the Sound Designer and Director’s vision by overseeing and supervising the hang, cabling, and programming of all sound equipment/effects.

The Sound Manager directs the Sound Department, allocates resources to create the desired concept of each production, and establishes priorities for execution of each production’s sound design. The Sound Manager oversees budgeting and is responsible for the operation of all Sound areas and personnel. The Sound Manager provides creative direction on all Play Makers productions during the season and instructs graduate and undergraduate students supporting sound production.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Graduation from a four‑year college or university with a degree preferably in the Theatre Arts, and some experience that provides the employee with the functional work experiences needed to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Qualifications , Competencies, And Experience

Prior experience professional theatre with a specialization in sound engineering and/or design. Must have working knowledge of managing and maintenance of equipment, sound systems, headsets and system components, computer technology in coordination with sound and video, and budget management.
