Position Overview

The Landscape Architecture Practice Manager will lead and oversee the operational management of a landscape architecture team (generally comprising between one and four employees). They ensure efficient project execution, high‑quality design standards, and client satisfaction while supporting business development and contributing to the strategic vision of the practice.

Responsibilities

Project Oversight

  • Lead and manage complex landscape architecture projects from conceptual design through construction administration, ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, and quality standards.
  • Distribute workload effectively by evaluating project requirements and team capacities, and implement strategic approaches to manage team backlog.
  • Review and approve design concepts, technical documents, and construction details to ensure compliance with industry standards and client expectations.
  • Develop and implement consistent QA/QC procedures and practices in partnership with departmental leadership.
  • Occasionally undertake production work to support project timelines, balancing hands‑on involvement with leadership responsibilities.
  • Resolve conflicts and negotiate solutions to project challenges, maintaining a collaborative approach.
  • Mentor team members, fostering a culture of collaboration, creativity, and excellence.
  • Provide guidance on design techniques, project management, and industry best practices to improve team performance.
  • Participate in salary reviews and performance evaluations as needed.
  • Oversee project budgets, monitor financial performance, and implement strategies to maximize profitability.
  • Assist in contract development and financial forecasting for the practice.
  • Review Billing Review Reports (BRRs) to ensure accuracy and alignment with project scope.
  • Prepare and present project updates and performance reports to department leadership, highlighting progress, achievements, and improvement areas.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and community partners to secure new business opportunities and repeat work.
  • Lead the preparation of proposals, presentations, and qualification packages that showcase the firm’s capabilities and design vision.
  • Coordinate community meetings, workshops, and outreach efforts to engage the public and gather feedback on designs and initiatives.

Strategic Leadership

  • Assist practice leads in developing and implementing the strategic vision for the landscape architecture practice, aligning it with broader department and firm goals.
  • Identify emerging trends in landscape architecture and sustainability, integrating them into practice to enhance innovation and competitiveness.

Collaboration and Coordination

  • Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery and enhance overall outcomes.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies, municipalities, and community organizations to ensure compliance with codes, permits, and standards.
  • Partner with corporate services (Accounting, Admin Services, HR) to streamline processes, ensure compliance, and enhance operational efficiency.
Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Urban, Regional, or Community Planning, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in planning, design, or a related field.
  • RLA licensure required.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and related technologies.
  • Deep expertise in design, planning, and regulatory standards.
  • Adaptability and resilience in a fast‑paced work environment.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, both oral and written, enabling clear presentation of complex materials.
  • Commitment to team success and personal career growth.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills to handle multiple competing priorities.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • Primarily an office setting; occasional field work with exposure to outdoor conditions.
  • Requires repetitive manual tasks (typing, picking, pinching) and prolonged sitting.
  • Visual, auditory, and physical requirements for extended computer use, standing, walking, and field access.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 5 pounds frequently, up to 30 pounds occasionally, and occasionally up to 50 pounds or more during field work.
  • Field work may involve long-term standing, frequent walking, and common site hazards.
  • Additional physical duties may be required.
