Assistant Director, Student Engagement – Jewish Life at Duke
The Assistant Director supports student engagement strategy, program development, data analysis, communication, and mentorship across undergraduate, graduate, and professional students within the Jewish Life at Duke team. The role applies Hillel International best practices, builds community, and strengthens the support provided to all Jewish students.

Job ResponsibilitiesThe Assistant Director leads student engagement strategy, program development, data analysis, communication, and mentorship across undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
Student Engagement & Programming (50%)- Engage one‑on‑one with undergraduate and graduate/professional students about their Jewish journey; 75% of engagement effort for undergraduates, 25% for graduates.
- Coach the JLD Springboard Fellow on logistics of large‑scale, student‑collaborative programming such as JFAM and the B’nai Mitzvah, including budget administration.
- Serve as staff advisor to student groups including Jewish Service Club and Jewtinos.
- Liaise with graduate student groups including Jewish Business Association, Jewish Law Student Association, and Jewish Medical Student Association; assess needs and administer JLD funding support.
- Develop leadership initiatives for leaders of JLD‑affiliated student groups.
- Supervise JLD student interns—hiring, training, mentorship, project assignments, and evaluation.
- Develop collaborative programming with other Identity and Cultural Centers and build relationships by meeting regularly with their ADs.
- Assist with key ritual/holiday events—Shabbat services, Friday night dinners, High Holidays, and Passover—helping with set‑up, sign‑in, and logistics.
- Lead implementation of Hillel International student engagement best practices; educate team members and student leaders.
- Serve as JLD student engagement database super‑user—ensure data integrity, run reports, and coach database users.
- Use engagement data to inform weekly outreach strategy and objectives.
- Collaborate with the Campus Rabbi to develop outreach goals and evaluation measures.
- Draft segments of annual assessment report with the Director.
- Oversee weekly student email newsletters, texting program, and social media calendar; guide interns in content creation.
- Coordinate with other Identity and Cultural Centers to ensure JLD content is included in their communications and vice versa.
- Execute JLD’s welcome efforts for first‑year students annually.
- Communicate with incoming students and families for transition support, including tours of the Freeman Center for Jewish Life.
- Serve as digital communicator for JLD; maintain the JLD website, attend communications meetings, and execute the communication strategy.
- Mentor the Springboard Fellow and Israel Fellow.
- Perform related duties as assigned to meet departmental, division, and university goals.
- Represent Jewish Life at Duke at department, division, university, and Hillel meetings, committees, and programs.
- Bachelor’s degree and two years of administration experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least one year working with students in a campus environment.
- Knowledge of Jewish people, practices, history, culture, and identity.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
- Fluency with office productivity platforms, social media platforms, Box, Mail Chimp, and web tools.
- Preferred: experience planning or staff on a student educational or experiential trip abroad.
Base salary USD $47,940–$75,990. Duke provides comprehensive medical, dental, retirement, family‑friendly, and cultural programs to eligible team members.
