Hourly Rate: $19.66 - $21.67/hour
Work Days/Times:
Monday-Friday 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
This position starts by June 1, 2026, and ends by August 14, 2026.
Position coordinates engaging teen-focused programming for a recreation center, including the City’s MyDurham Teen program locations. Incumbent works with staff to plan and implement recreation programs targeting teens ages 13-18, engages and mentors participants, and collaborates with community partners to plan teen-focused events.
- Develops documents such as monthly calendars for program sites.
- Manages program spaces, acquires supplies, and maintains cleanliness and organization.
- Supervises youth groups during programs, maintains discipline and order, issues equipment, and conducts games and activities.
- Assists in training, assigning, leading, and evaluating staff and volunteers.
- Leads interactive recreation workshops, special events and other programs.
- Organizes positive alternative and preventive education projects.
- Assists in the development of programs to meet community needs.
- Develops community partnerships, builds relationships, markets programs, and recruits volunteers.
- Schedules and organizes teen programming and outreach, schedules meetings and activities at site facilities.
- Enters participant information and program registrations into recreation software system, manages and updates existing information.
- Maintains and prepares attendance and activity reports and other program documents.
- Addresses participant and staff needs and concerns and communicates them to supervisor.
- Completes program and staff evaluation forms at the end of the program.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training programs, orientations, and evaluation sessions.
- Observes necessary precautions to secure the safety of program participants and renders first aid in case of minor injury.
- Completes accident reports.
Knowledge of:
- Recreational planning and the provision of general and specialized recreation programs for teens.
- Gang awareness.
- Awareness of social media platforms teens are utilizing.
Skill in:
- Organizing and leading group recreational programs.
- Interacting positively and communicating effectively with teens.
- Behavior management and conflict resolution.
- Conducting research and evaluations.
- Report writing and record keeping.
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalency (GED, HiSet, TASC).
- Two (2) years of experience working with teens in a recreational setting, supervising activities, and providing customer service.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Valid Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED – with Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector Certification or obtain within the first six months of employment.
