Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Department of Mathematics and Physics within the College of Health and Sciences promotes North Carolina Central University’s commitment to excellence in instruction, research, and service, offering programs leading to the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in mathematics and physics. The department offers all General Education Curriculum courses in mathematics and physics.

Primary Purpose of Position

Under the direction of the Associate Dean for the College of Health and Sciences, the Professional Tutor/Academic Coach for the STEM Learning Center provides tutoring and learning assistance, academic and student development coaching through the STEM Learning Center to help guide students toward successful learning in mathematics and science outside the classroom.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Commitment to diversity and inclusion; knowledgeable of university and pre‑professional curriculum requirements; experienced in tutoring practices and principles; intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to read and interpret course materials such as syllabi and homework instructions, write daily reports and email correspondence, and speak effectively with students. Ability to explain concepts clearly and address problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations.

Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry, required.

Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Responsibilities
  • Identify tutoring needs and provide academic support.
  • Facilitate learning as a guide or coach to help students become successful, independent learners.
  • Use varied instructional techniques in tutoring sessions to meet learning needs.
  • Integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize students’ academic progress.
  • Conduct monthly workshops in academics and mathematical skills.
  • Promote the college’s tutoring program during outreach activities and events.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Collect necessary course syllabus and material for tutoring sessions.
  • Consult with faculty on student progress and suggest strategies for assistance.
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and collaborate with referring faculty on attendance and progress.
  • Maintain a caseload of students and provide monthly progress reports.
  • Complete and submit monthly tutor logs.
  • Perform other related activities as assigned by the Lead Professional Coach/Activity Coordinator.
