Position Overview

The Academic Advisor provides academic advisement to NCCU’s University College constituents (first-year students, sophomores, and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, and presentations regarding majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. The position also assesses students’ academic progression, retention, and holistic development, and collaborates with campus partners to enhance the student experience.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conduct one-on-one and small group advising sessions to guide students on majors, degree requirements, progress, and course selection.
  • Review student progression; make schedule adjustments and recommendations.
  • Assist students in accessing support services (tutoring, supplemental instruction, workshops).
  • Provide intervention to high-risk students using early alert mechanisms.
  • Utilize advising technology tools to maintain records and streamline advising processes.
  • Implement strategies to monitor and support academic progression, retention, and holistic development.
  • Participate in outreach efforts, orientations, and campus events; facilitate workshops and presentations.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners; serve on committees; attend departmental meetings; perform related duties.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in higher education advising preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with students, supervisors, and colleagues.
  • Familiarity with and appreciation for NCCU programs and curricula.
