The Duke University Testing Center within the Office of Undergraduate Education is seeking a Part-Time Testing Center Proctor to join our team. In this important role, you will support all aspects of daily testing center operations while helping create an accessible, supportive, and inclusive testing environment for students. You will play a critical role in ensuring that exams are administered smoothly, securely, and in alignment with approved accommodations.
Daily, you will engage directly with students, faculty, and staff—providing excellent customer service, maintaining exam integrity, and supporting a high-functioning testing environment. The Testing Center is committed to providing an educational experience that recognizes diversity and cultural competence as essential components of excellence. You will help foster a welcoming and inclusive environment while supporting students from all backgrounds and ensuring equitable testing practices.
Minimum Requirements:
- Two years of postsecondary education and two years of related experience; or Bachelor's degree in lieu of experience requirement
- Ability to work evenings and weekends, especially during peak exam periods
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree strongly preferred
- Previous experience in a testing center or similar environment
- Strong organizational and administrative skills
- Strong oral, written, and intercultural communication skills
- Ability to promptly resolve complex problems
- Ability to work effectively in a high-stress, detail-oriented environment
- Proficiency with electronic data systems and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), Zoom, and Web Ex
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exam integrity
- Experience working directly with and supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to serve as an advocate for inclusion and accessibility
Other Requirements:
- Ability to serve as an exam reader and scribe as needed
- Ability to monitor testing environments, including use of proctoring cameras
- Commitment to maintaining secure handling of exams and sensitive materials
Work Arrangement:
Onsite. The work is performed on-site in the Testing Center.
Position Responsibilities:
- Proctoring and Test Preparation (85%)
- Provide frontline support by greeting students and delivering excellent customer service
- Communicate effectively with faculty, students, and team members regarding exam logistics
- Schedule testing rooms and exams, ensuring appropriate placement for students using testing software
- Prepare exams for administration, including downloading materials and organizing documentation
- Convert exams into appropriate alternative formats to support approved accommodations
- Proctor exams while maintaining strict security and ensuring only approved accommodations are permitted
- Monitor proctoring systems and cameras to uphold testing integrity
- Serve as an exam reader and/or scribe when required
- Prepare completed exams and organize them for return to faculty
- Deliver completed exams to faculty using appropriate protocols
- Administrative Support (15%)
- Interact with faculty regarding exam scheduling, delivery, and student-related questions
- Assist with management of student lockers and testing center resources
- Support maintenance of testing center voicemail and email communications
- Participate in professional development to remain current on testing practices, policies, and accessibility standards
