Role

Description:

Part-Time Latin Instructor

The Mission of Carolina Collegiate is to provide a modern college prep STEM education that prepares students to shape the future of society. Our fundamental belief is that the sciences advance society, and that through thoughtful social organizations, the sciences can improve the human condition and the natural world.

Overview

We are in the founding years of our school’s history, and this is an exciting time to be a part of the founding team in creating a tradition that lasts a lifetime. Carolina Collegiate is seeking a passionate part‑time Latin teacher to join this founding team. We have an unwavering belief that all students can achieve at high levels, and we recognize that world language literacy deeply enhances analytical STEM thinking, particularly with the Latin language.

Latin provides the absolute linguistic foundation for modern scientific, medical, and technological terminology. By bringing Latin to CCHS, we are giving our STEM scholars an unmatched vocabulary edge, expanding their sense of Purpose, Possibility, and Belonging.

The Goal of the Role

The part‑time Latin Teacher has a highly focused academic scope tailored to an 8‑hour weekly commitment. Your primary objective is to deliver high‑quality instruction that guides 9th‑grade students through the Latin I curriculum, with the potential to challenge a small group of accelerated students in Latin II.

By utilizing small‑group dynamics, you will support student development to ensure they build:

  • An enduring ability to read and write Latin, as well as analyze text in academic settings.
  • A rich understanding of the historical and cultural context of the classical world.
  • A deep appreciation for the etymological connection between Latin and modern professional fields like medicine.
The Nuts and Bolts of the Role (Schedule & Scope)

To respect your time and ensure consistency for our students, this position features a set, predictable schedule totaling 8 hours per week:

  • Monday through Thursday (Direct Instruction): 3:10 pm - 4:10 pm
  • Friday (Direct Instruction & Support): 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm (flexible)
  • Planning & Grading: 2 hours per week, completed asynchronously at your convenience.
  • Scope

    Note:

This position is strictly focused on instructional delivery, grading, and planning. It does not carry full‑time school obligations such as morning huddles, student arrival/dismissal duties, House Advisory leadership, or administrative committee work.
Position Responsibilities

As our Latin Teacher, you will:

  • Curriculum Delivery:
Collaborate with school leadership to select and implement the ideal instructional tools, leveraging a modern digital platform, a traditional textbook, or a hybrid model depending on your expert input.
  • Small‑Group Instruction:
Lead students through the mechanics of Latin writing and grammar, tailoring instruction to support or accelerate small cohorts of learners.
  • Bi‑Annual Intensives:
Twice a year, for two weeks, students will pivot to an intensive "deep dive" exploring the historical relevance of Latin and its modern implications (such as its footprint in medical terminology). You will maintain your regular 8‑hour weekly cycle during these weeks to anchor this learning, with the option to discuss expanded, deeper involvement if it aligns with your interest.
Qualifications

We welcome applications from a diverse range of instructional backgrounds. We are highly open to graduate students, retired professionals, uncertified experts with deep subject‑matter knowledge, as well as certified teachers.

  • Subject Matter Expertise:
Deep, demonstrably clear knowledge of Latin grammar, syntax, composition, and Roman history.
  • Education:

Bachelor’s Degree required (preferably in Classics, Latin, Linguistics, or a related field).
  • Licensure: A valid North Carolina Professional Educator’s License is welcome but not required for this role.
  • Characteristics:
    • Belief in the mission of Carolina Collegiate High School and Our Core Values.
    • A "Founding Team" mindset: willing to be a collaborative team player and bring passion to a growing school culture.
    • Comfort or experience using technology to supplement and drive classroom instruction.
Compensation and Contract Structure
  • Employment Type:

    Contracted Hourly Professional Engagement.
  • Compensation:
Participation in this role over 32 weeks results in a total compensation of $10,500.
  • Benefits

    Note:

As a targeted part‑time role, this position is not eligible for the NC State Health Plan, NC Flex supplemental benefits, paid time off, or school retirement matching packages. It does, however, offer a highly predictable schedule, an enthusiastic student body, and a collaborative, supportive working environment.
