Success Coaches

Success Coaches motivate and assist students through supportive relationships, helping them align their everyday actions to their short- and long-term academic and career goals. Using a holistic approach, Success Coaches partner with students by providing guidance along their pathway to academic, professional, and personal success within the context of the college experience.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions with assigned caseload of students to develop learning, financial, and life strategies that promote student success, specifically focusing on developing skills in time/stress management, setting and working towards goals, developing and implementing study plans, preparing for tests, utilizing individual learning needs, financial literacy, and other student success skills and strategies.
  • Assisting students with identifying and affirming strengths, setting goals and identifying, planning for, and overcoming potential obstacles and defining steps in accessing the appropriate services to support them when challenges arise.
  • Work closely with other departments and offices to provide institutional resources, assistance, and guidance to assist students in overcoming academic and non‑academic obstacles to student success.
  • Collaborate with internal workforce and career development partners to ensure that students receive career guidance and support.
  • Personally, connect students to various on‑campus and/or off‑campus resources (e.g., Industry, Community, Governmental, Faith Based, etc.) to further their success and well‑being.
  • Foster the development of critical and creative thinking skills, problem solving, learning strategies, and inter-and intra‑personal skills to result in improved success in and outside of the classroom, more connections to the campus community, and emphasis on future goals.
  • In collaboration with faculty and through referrals, assist students with course selection, registration, and appropriate education solutions to promote student success.
  • Determine the best personalized, proactive approach to serve students and provide follow through and track the advancement of provided services through intentional assessment and evaluation.
  • Review course withdrawals and capture data to identify and address the reasons why students withdraw as well as create intentional intervention strategies to decrease/deter the withdrawal outcome.
  • Manage, monitor, and use available early alert systems to create intervention strategies and resolve student issues.
  • Serve on committees and work collaboratively with key areas to support persistence and graduation initiatives.
  • Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in academic advising, advocacy, career counseling, social work, and/or coaching; one year of successful counseling or advising experience at a community college, similar postsecondary institution, or community agency.
  • Associate’s degree with a significant amount of related experience will be considered.
  • A thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System and Durham Technical Community College.
  • Ability to embrace and promote a culture of equity‑mindedness and anti‑racism, while providing support for Durham Tech to reach its equity and anti‑racism goals.
  • Ability to identify and provide outreach to students to encourage participation in coaching appointments and other means of intentional intervention and student support activities.
  • Demonstrated skill in working with students to delineate and achieve educational and career goals.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of success coaching standards, protocol, and best practices designed to support student retention and persistence by helping them navigate through their chosen pathway and/or program of study.
  • Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective advising and coaching.
  • Competence in computer technologies, such as Microsoft Office, presentation programs and student information systems (e.g., Ellucian Colleague, Self‑Service, etc.).
