This opportunity is for an Academic Counselor in the Department of Nursing.
Primary Function of Organizational UnitThe Department of Nursing aims to meet manpower needs for quality health care locally, nationally, and globally through quality educational programs, research, scholarly endeavors, and community service.
Primary Purpose of PositionThe Academic Counselor will provide consistent advisement for all pre-nursing and nursing students and veterans. The employee will collaborate with the Director of Student Support Services and Senior Advisor for planning, coordinating, and evaluating Student Support Services, including recruitment, pre-admission tracking and advising, admissions, orientation, registration, financial aid, graduation, and management of student information systems. This position will assist with formation and maintenance of policies related to student admissions and advisement.

The advisor position requires a Master’s degree. A minimum of two years of work experience preferred.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties- Interview and counsel students regarding admission procedures and academic requirements for the nursing degree program; take notes during interviews and provide feedback to the admissions committee; inform students about the nursing programs offered and answer related questions.
- Coordinate and refer students to departmental and university support services, including academic tutoring, financial aid, career planning, mentoring programs, and services for students with limited English proficiency.
- Identify diverse student needs, develop and maintain individualized action plans, implement retention strategies, and regularly review progress with students to adjust plans as needed.
- Develop and deliver presentations to classes, student organizations, and employers; provide career information and planning activities; organize programs such as career fairs and on-campus interviewing.
- Implement proactive advising strategies for veterans and at-risk students to support successful matriculation in the nursing program.
