Position: AmeriCorps Next Step Adviser - Advise NC at NC State

Building on over a decade of success within the College Advising Corps framework, Appalachian State University, Duke University, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of North Carolina Wilmington have united to launch the next steps in college and career advising for the state. Representing public and private statewide and regional institutions, Advise NC connects students with the next steps that best fits their postsecondary goals.

Today, Advise NC operates in 82 counties and serves more than 160 high schools, with the goal of delivering a best-in-class advising model that is:

  • Responsive and adaptive to local needs across North Carolina
  • Grounded in research, evidence, and proven results for students
  • Designed for scale and long‑term sustainability
Member Duties

The Next Step Adviser is a full‑time Ameri Corps member placed in a high‑need high school to support students and families with postsecondary planning. Advisers help students make informed decisions about their post‑high school pathways, including college enrollment, military enlistment, or employment. Next Step Advisers provide 1:1 advising on college admissions and financial aid, assist students with completing applications, and help families understand admissions and financial aid offers.

Advisers also organize and deliver group workshops, classroom presentations, and community‑based events to promote postsecondary awareness and planning. They contribute to program evaluation and sustainability by collecting data, submitting monthly reports, and participating in training and professional development to maintain expertise in postsecondary pathways. The position requires a 1,700‑hour service commitment aligned with the school calendar and may include evening or weekend activities.
