Job Description

Reports To:

Principal

Supervises:
May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose:

To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time
    :
    The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready for each lesson; starts the class quickly; keeps students on task; maintains high student time‑on‑task.
  • Management of Student Behavior
    :
    Establishes rules and procedures for routine matters, verbal participation, movement, monitors behavior, stops inappropriate behavior promptly while maintaining dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation
    :
    Begins with a review, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents material clearly, provides examples, assigns tasks, asks appropriate questions, maintains a brisk pace, facilitates transitions, summarizes main points.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
    :
    Maintains work standards, circulates during class, uses oral and written checks, asks clear questions.
  • Instructional Feedback
    :
    Provides feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, probes after incorrect ones.
  • Facilitating Instruction
    :
    Uses diagnostic information to develop objectives, maintains records, aligns objectives with student needs, uses resources to support program.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment
    :
    Treats students fairly, interacts with students, coworkers, parents, and community.
  • Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
    :
    Carries out assigned duties, follows policies, seeks professional development.

Additional job functions:
Performs other related work as required; participates in the administration of state exams (may travel), attends district staff development days and departmental office days. Standard workday 8:00‑4:00 pm; exceptions for testing, meetings, field trips.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or related area that qualifies for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

    Inspect items for dimensions.
  • Motor Coordination:
    Coordinate hands and eyes with office equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity:
    Handle office tools and items.
  • Color Discrimination:
    Differentiate colors and shades.
  • Interpersonal Temperament:
    Adapt to stress, emergencies.
  • Physical Communication:
    Talk, hear, use telephone.

  • Constantly monitor safety and well‑being of students.
  • Motivate students.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly environment.
  • Perform general clerical duties.
  • Maintain order and discipline.
  • Operate common office machines.
