The Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle Grades, Reading, & Special Education department is further committed to strengthening faculty involvement in research, professional development, and community engagement to enhance candidate and P‑12 student outcomes and teacher quality in response to 21st Century, southeastern region of North Carolina communities and global expectations.

Primary Purpose of the Position

The Department Chair serves as the administrator of an academic department. The Department Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Education and serves as a member of the College’s leadership team. In collaboration with the faculty and staff, he/she is responsible for the daily operation of the department as well as strategic planning and implementation; assessment of student learning outcomes;

class scheduling; curriculum development; and specialized accreditation, certification, licensure, and/or program review. In addition to maintaining an acceptable level of research and scholarship, the chair’s primary duties include managing the department budget and seeking external funds; recruiting, hiring, supervising, and evaluating faculty and staff; recruiting, advising, and assisting students; maintaining relevant employee and student records, producing various reports for the Dean’s Office, building collaborative partnerships, and providing vision and leadership to the Department.

The Department Chair serves as the spokesperson for the department to internal and external audiences, and as the leader in supporting shared governance and implementing campus policies and the institutional mission.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • An earned Ph.D. or Ed.D.
  • Prior PK-12 and higher education teaching experience.
  • Prior higher education administrative experience.
  • Tenured or tenure-eligible at the Associate or Full Professor level.
  • Experience in directed research of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • A record of scholarship/research, and service at the higher education level.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills; strong technology skills.

Skills and Abilities

(Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience in developing online and hybrid undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Experience with aligning standards to course evidence.
  • 3 to 5 years of progressive experience with early childhood, elementary, middle grades, reading, or special education.
