Instructor – HVAC (Part‑Time Adjunct / Contractual)

The HVAC Adjunct Instructor delivers high‑quality instruction in the Dorsey College HVAC Technician Program, ensuring students acquire the technical knowledge and hands‑on skills necessary for a successful career in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning trade. Instructors plan and deliver engaging lessons in lecture and laboratory settings, monitor student progress, and address questions, concerns, and challenges in a timely and professional manner.

• Plan, prepare, and deliver quality classroom instruction per the approved course outline using a variety of teaching methods.
• Assess student learning using appropriate methods and demonstrate strong outcomes in retention, success, and attendance.
• Conduct engaging lecture and/or lab sessions, motivate students, and involve them in discussions and activities.
• Advise students on attendance, grades, and issues to ensure course completion.
• Contact absentee students by text, email, or phone to improve retention.
• Manage classroom environment in compliance with campus policies for attendance, punctuality, and professionalism.
• Prepare classroom materials, including instructor name, contact, date, class name, day’s objectives, and next session objectives, and ensure supplies/equipment are ready.
• Participate in faculty, staff, and committee meetings; attend commencement events.
• Engage in professional growth activities such as membership in educational associations, continuing education, and industry seminars.
• Support related departments (Financial Aid, Admissions, Career Services) and maintain legal and ethical standards.
• Maintain professional contacts with employers, including at least one site visit or phone conversation per year.
• Demonstrate continuous improvement via the Faculty Development Program metrics (success rate, retention rate, attendance rate, student evaluations, final exam pass rates).

• Working knowledge of HVAC systems—heating, cooling, ventilation, refrigeration, indoor air quality—and related regulations (EPA Section 608, ASHRAE standards, local, state, and national mechanical codes).
• Knowledge of occupational safety standards, OSHA regulations, and safe work practices.
• Proficient with basic office equipment, computers, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain complex HVAC concepts clearly.
• Strong organizational and time‑management skills for managing multiple courses and responsibilities.
• Ability to use emotional intelligence to identify struggling students and implement strategies to improve retention.
• Ability to maintain professional standards, confidentiality, and ethical behavior.
• Adaptability to a dynamic educational environment and embrace continuous improvement.
• Independence in working with faculty, staff, and administration; positive attitude, initiative, creativity, and motivation of staff.

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum two years of HVAC trade experience or equivalent.
• Completion of an HVAC Excellence trade program preferred.
• EPA Section 608 (Type2) certification required (obtained within 120 days of first day teaching and maintained per agency guidelines).
• Relevant industry certifications (OSHA
  10/30, NATE, NCCER, or state/local HVAC licensure) preferred but not required.
• Must successfully pass a background check per Dorsey College policies.
• Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience preferred but not required.

• Evening or weekend hours as needed.
• Possible exposure to refrigerants, gases, HVAC equipment, noise, and varying temperatures.
• Requires navigation and use of Canvas LMS and other digital platforms.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during classroom and laboratory instruction; sit or stand for extended periods during online facilitation and administrative tasks.
• Requires bending, kneeling, reaching, and working in confined spaces.
• Manually operate HVAC tools, test equipment, and computer equipment.
• Clear sight, hearing, and communication for instruction and lab safety.
• Lift and carry up to 50pounds.
