Job DescriptionReports To: Principal
Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Duties and Responsibilities Major Function:Management of Instructional Time
The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment prepared at the start of each lesson; starts class promptly; brings students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
Major Function:Management of Student Behavior
The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters, student verbal participation, talk during various instructional activities, and student movement in the classroom. The teacher frequently monitors behavior during whole‑class, small group, and seatwork activities and during transitions, stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, and maintains student dignity.
Major Function:Instructional Presentation
The teacher reviews previous materials, introduces the lesson and specific learning objectives, speaks fluently and precisely, presents the lesson using concepts understandable to students, provides relevant examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with a high success rate, asks appropriate questions, conducts the lesson at a brisk pace, facilitates smooth transitions, confirms task clarity, and summarizes the main point(s) at the end.
Major Function:Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
The teacher maintains clear, firm work standards and due dates, circulates during class work to check student performance, routinely uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress, and poses questions clearly, one at a time.
Major Function:Instructional Feedback
The teacher provides feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work to encourage student growth, affirms correct responses, and offers sustaining feedback after incorrect or missing responses by probing, repeating, giving clues, or allowing more time.
Major Function:Facilitating Instruction
The teacher develops an instructional plan aligned with school and system‑wide goals, uses diagnostic information from assessments to revise objectives, maintains accurate performance records, matches objectives and strategies to student needs, and utilizes available human and material resources.
Major Function:Interacting Within the Educational Environment
The teacher treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
Major Function:Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws, policies, and regulations, follows a professional development plan, and demonstrates evidence of growth.

Minimum Training and ExperienceDegree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job FunctionsPhysical Requirements
Must be able to use classroom equipment (computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, equipment for children with special needs, etc.) and exert a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
