High School Special Education Teacher

Role Description The High School Special Education Teacher will design and deliver individualized and small-group instruction for neurodivergent high school students in alignment with state standards and school curricula. This full-time, on-site role in Durham, NC includes planning and adapting lessons, implementing multi-sensory instructional strategies, and differentiating materials to address a range of learning needs and strengths. The teacher will collect and analyze student data, monitor progress toward academic and functional goals, and collaborate with families, related service providers, and colleagues to support each student’s success.

Daily responsibilities also include creating a structured, trauma-informed classroom environment, using positive behavior supports, supervising students during school activities, and participating in IEP meetings, staff meetings, and professional development. The teacher will communicate regularly with caregivers and team members to ensure consistent, student-centered support.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of Special Education and experience teaching students with a range of Disabilities, including neurodivergent learners.
• Demonstrated Teaching experience at the Middle School or high school level, with the ability to adapt instruction across content areas.
• Excellent Communication skills for collaborating with students, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
• Experience developing and implementing IEPs, behavior support plans, and accommodations or modifications.
• Ability to use multi-sensory, trauma-informed, and student-centered instructional approaches.
• Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
• State teaching license or eligibility in Special Education (or commitment to obtain within an agreed timeline).
• Commitment to inclusive, anti-bias, and non-discriminatory educational practices.
• Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and comfort working in a collaborative, team-based school environment.
